1 Birth rate (BR) is the number of babies born alive per 1,000 people per year Death rate (DR) is the number of deaths per 1,000 people per year What factors can affect birth rate? HIC?LIC? What factors can affect death rate? HIC?LIC?

2 Birth and death rates are expressed per 1,000 so that figures for countries of different sizes can be compared. China’s population 1.3 billion and India ‘s population of 1.1 billion can be compared with smaller countries e.g. Singapore 4.6 million and Luxembourg at 480,222. So when does a country’s population change? Natural change is the difference between birth rates and death rates

3 Natural increase (NI) happens when? Natural decrease (ND) happens when? What factors can affect this? When? So how do we calculate Natural change? UK BR = 10.7 per 1,000 per year DR = 10.1 per 1000 per year NI = BR-DR (10.7-10.1) = 0.6/10 = 0.06% NI = BR – DR (always expressed as a percentage, so answer must be divided by 10) Czech: BR = 9.0 per 1,000 per year DR = 10.6 per 1,000 per year
