2 Notes Defining relative clauses Defining relative clauses They add and give essential information about a noun or a noun phrase. Ex: People like to go to restaurants that have good food. Non- defining relative clauses Non- defining relative clauses They describe the noun, but the information they give is not essential to understand the noun. They are set off by commas. Ex: That restaurant, which has good food, is the most popular one in town.

9 Contrasting connectors Despite-In spite of: Are used as prepositions. *I won the game in spite of the rain/ raining all day. *I won the game despite the rain. Although- Even though: have the same meaning they begin a clause. *Although the movie was great, we waited on the line for so long. However-Nevertheless-On the other hand: are use to start a 2 nd sentence that contrast the 1 st one. They are followed by a comma. *The city is expensive. However, I love living in here. *The apartment is expensive. On the other hand, it has a great view.
