SFH Update vs. Scanning To sustain normal network operations, serving ABS broadcasts and adjusts its configuration via system information updating –The critical information is broadcasted via P-SFH/S-SFH IEs in 802.16m To perform handover, serving ABS allocates a time interval for cell scanning –AMS scans the neighboring cells during unavailable time intervals –AMS resumes the normal data transmission during available time intervals

SFH Updating during AMS Unavailable Time Interval What if the system information is required to be updated while AMS is in the unavailable interval? –AMS may not get the up-to-date system information ex: BR information, FFR information

Current P802.16m/D3 Text System information updating is related to cell-wide/network-wide configuration. It’s not a reasonable design to postpone the SFH updating just because an AMS is performing scanning operation! In P802.16m/D3 text: –An ABS may transmit AAI_SCN-RSP to start AMS scan reporting with or without scanning interval allocation. –If Scan Duration field contains a non-zero value, the system parameters (except cell bar information) which are carried through SFH shall not be changed during whole scanning duration specified in the AAI_SCN- RSP message. –If Scan Duration field contains a non-zero value, scanning interval pattern included in the AAI_SCN-RSP message replaces previous existing scanning interval pattern.

Possible Solutions in D3 If SFH will be updated at time t+x and ABS is aware of this oncoming update at time t, –For the AMS that requests scanning after time t and the required unavailable interval involves time t+x, 1.ABS may reject the AMS’s request (Scan Duration field is zero) 2.ABS may reschedule the AMS’s required unavailable interval in AAI_SCN-REQ –For the AMS that had requested scanning before time t, 1.ABS may reschedule the AMS’s unavailable interval by sending AAI_SCN-RSP

Scanning and SFH Updating Simultaneously In some cases, AMSs may have ability to do scanning and performing SFH updating simultaneously. –performing intra-frequency preamble measurement –Multi-antenna capability 16m ABSs shall have a way to notice AMS to do scanning and SFH updating simultaneously in these cases when SFH updating is oncoming.

Proposed Solution Add an indication bit in AAI_SCN-RSP If SFH will be updated at time t+x and ABS is aware of this oncoming update at time t, –For the AMS that requests scanning after time t and the required unavailable interval involves time t+x, 1.ABS may reject the AMS’s request (Scan Duration field is zero) 2.ABS may reschedule the AMS’s required unavailable interval in AAI_SCN-REQ 3.ABS may notice the AMS to do scanning and SFH updating simultaneously (indication bit is set to ‘1’) –For the AMS that had requested scanning before time t, 1.ABS may reschedule the AMS’s unavailable interval by sending AAI_SCN-RSP 2.ABS may notice the AMS to do scanning and SFH updating simultaneously by sending AAI_SCN-RSP (indication bit is set to ‘1’)

Proposed Text Modify Table 686: NameValueUsage Scan duration Duration (in units of AAI subframes) of the requested scanning period. Scan Purpose 0b0: scan BS(s) which is in the list of the AAI_NBR-ADV message 0b1: scan BS(s) which is not in the list of the AAI_NBR-ADV message SFH updating indicator 0b0: nothing 0b1: SFH Update is oncoming and AMS shall do scanning and SFH updating simultaneously Report mode… ……
