What is Abnormal? (and what is normal?)

What is normal? conforming with, adhering to, or constituting a norm, standard, pattern, level, or type; typical functioning or occurring in a natural way; lacking observable abnormalities or deficiencies relating to or characterized by average intelligence or development free from emotional disorder the usual or expected state, form, amount, or degree

What is abnormal? There is no one absolute definition of psychology disorders. Some proposed definitions include: A pattern of behavioral or psychological symptoms that causes significant personal distress, impairs the ability to function in one or more important areas of life, or both.

When behavior is atypical, disturbing, maladaptive, and unjustifiable. Involves at least two of the following: distress, maladaptiveness, irrationality, unpredictability, unconventionality, statistical rarity, and/or observer discomfort.

Sanity and insanity are legal rather than psychological terms. In most states the legal definition of insanity relates to the ability of the defendant to distinguish right from wrong. This requires a determination on the part of the court. Are you insane?
