1 Interactive Student Notebooks For Language Arts & Social Studies Classes

2 Interactive Notebooks Are… A place to record information Enable you to make connections Enable you to process/understand information Help you become independent, creative thinkers & writers

3 Two Sides in IN’s The Right Side = information & work from class Teacher directed (led) Facts & Information Includes testable or quizzable information You will be allowed to use IN’s on tests & quizzes The Left Side = is student directed; contains connections you make to information; includes interpretations & responses to learning. Shows your understanding of “Right Side” information

4 The Right Side… Record notes from class, reading, lectures, group or partner discussions Literary Terms Assignments Vocabulary Outlines Teacher-given examples Handouts Any other type of “INPUT” the teacher gives you

5 The Left Side… Reading responses & journals Thinking maps & other graphic organizers (diagrams) Pictures, cartoons, sketches, songs, poems Connected or related ideas Reflections, quotes, perspectives Mnemonic aids or other memory devices Brainstorming Writing Prompts & Responses Examples

6 Materials Needed: Notebook – spiral (at least 100 pages) or binder May need to have a new notebook each nine weeks COLLEGE RULED paper No. 2 pencils – preferably mechanical Pens – dark blue or black ink only Colored pencils (NO MARKERS) Crayons Highlighters Glue or tape (best) Pencil bag

Summarize information Distinguish between relevant & irrelevant information Compare/contrast information Make connections Brainstorm ideas Writing ideas Portfolio of Learning Writing down notes = more learning/better understanding Teaches organization Permission to be playful & creative – “think outside the box”

8 How to Organize Your Interactive Notebook Notebook “Cover” (first page): Title: “My Language Arts Interactive Notebook” Student’s name, Teacher’s name, Class Period Design to reflect author’s (your) personality & style Drawings & diagrams of items that remind you of language arts

9 Author’s Page: “This IN LA Notebook Belongs to _______________” Birthday Hobbies Photo (optional), magazine cut-outs, or computer art Drawings that describe YOU Examples: favorite food, favorite class/subject, pets, family, favorite book, magazine, movie, or t.v. show, favorite place to visit, favorite music, favorite quote/saying Colorful & creative = Showcase YOU!

10 Table of Contents: Begin with 2 nd page in IN that lists name of activity, date, and page number Use first four pages in notebook ONLY for Table of Contents (you will need to leave these pages blank for later use) Must add activities to the Table of Contents as you complete them Important to keep this page up-to-date ALL PAGES of the IN MUST be NUMBERED Page numbers go in the top “outer” corner = upper right corner for “Right Side” pages; upper left corner for “Left Side” pages

11 Class Outline or Syllabus: Handout from teacher describing policies, procedures, & expectations for their class Grading Materials (Supply List) Paste or tape into right side page of notebook Include in Table of Contents Is a “Right Side” page Corresponding “Left Side” page will be labeled RESOURCES Resources page will include teacher wiki address (www.msanderson1.pbworks.com) & other websites & sources of information. Page will be updated with information periodicallywww.msanderson1.pbworks.com

12 Clock Buddy Page: A “Right Side” page that contains a clock diagram Diagram will have spaces to list 12 “buddies” you will work with for pair activities from time to time. Teacher will explain in more detail later

13 Each Unit… Begins with a UNIT COVER PAGE Teacher will provide more information & help you set this up Will include: Unit Title Essential Questions Learning Targets Criteria for Success

14 More About Student “Left Side” Entries… Getting used to using the Left Side will take some time Place where you can be creative and think critically Teacher will guide you for a while until you “”get the hang of it” Your OUTPUT shows understanding of the “Right Side” information Where you interact with the “Right Side” INPUT

(you are limited only by your own creativity) Additional teacher-generated ideas…

17 Extra Effort/Credit… Illustrate your notes (ex. With sketches of literary figures – authors, characters) Map sketches Cartoons NEATNESS Color & highlighting Well-organized Completeness

18 Are IN’s Graded? YES – they are scored by using a rubric for IN’s Count for 30% of your overall grade in Language Arts Checked regularly – every 3 to 4 weeks Collected near the end of the grading period Correctness – work is NEAT & shows attention to detail Completeness –all work is COMPLETE Critical Thinking Organization – all pages labeled, no missing pages, up-to-date table of Contents Grammar – yes grammar counts Original – all work has been done by YOU – no one else Note books must turned in on time!

19 What If I’m Absent… All notebook assignments, like other class assignments, MUST BE MADE UP Check teacher wiki for assignment calendar Check with me [your teacher] BUT not DURING CLASS – after or before class please Check with classmates

20 What if I Use a Computer? Print notes & assignment Take time EACH DAY to ORGANIZE your notebook Do not wait until a notebook check is announced to organize All notebook check MAY NOT be ANNOUNCED

21 What if I Have Questions Later… This power point presentation will be available on the teacher wiki See your teacher before or after class Don’t be afraid to ASK questions Don’t wait until the last minute to ask your questions

22 Finally… Your Interactive Notebooks are VERY IMPORTANT Notebooks MUST be brought to class DAILY…NO EXCEPTIONS Take care of your notebook If you lose your notebook, YOU MUST RE-CREATE IT Not having a notebook is NOT AN OPTION You may need a notebook for each grading period (4 = for each nine week period)
