(Reading Goals & Expectations)  To identify your child’s needs and improving their learning environment.  Improving reading comprehension and reaching grade-level capacity.  To enjoy reading in school and outside of school  Improving standardized test scores for FSA & I-Ready.  Improving overall confidence in reading comprehension

5 Materials Needed  - Composition Book  - Highlighters  - Two plain manila folders  - Folder (With pockets inside...this is for parent letters & homework)  - One subject notebook  - 3 reams of copy paper, 1 set of headphones (no earbuds)  - Reporter notebook (Journalism class only)  - Flash Drive (1 GB or more)

6 Grading Guidelines 90-100% A 50% Test/Quizzes 80-89% B 30% Classwork 70-79% C 10% Project 60-69% D 10 % Homework 0-59% F  MGA standards!

8 Attendance  Attendance is essential, too many absences will hurt your average grade due to insufficient grades in the gradebook.  If your child needs to leave early from my class because of a doctor’s appointment, try your best to advise me and bring a doctor’s note the next day.  If you have an excused absence, please remind your child to obtain any missed work from me.

9 Homework  Homework is assigned two to three times a week.  Assignments are not accepted past deadline, unless there is an excused note. (This creates responsibility & discipline)  Assignments not turned in on time will have a Z on the gradebook, which is a zero.  NOTE: For every three homework assignments not turned in, detention will be given & classroom economy fine will be applied.

11 6th Grade Novels  Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen (Due August 31st 2016)  Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen  Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick

12 7th & 8th Grade Novels  Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (Realistic Fiction)  Maze Runner by James Dashner (Fiction)  Lord of the Flies by William Golding (Realistic Fiction)

13 Yay for Technology !  Students will read their novels from a paperback book versus digital to avoid distractions & for marginal notes.  Students will use I-Ready reading program for guided reading, personal individual evaluation and progress throughout the year.  Students will use iPad or other electronic devices on occasion to complete tasks or assignments. (Not mandatory)

14 JOURNALISM COURSE

15 Class Learning Objectives:  1. To develop skills in journalistic writing, editing, photography, and news broadcasting.  2. To develop computer skills in touch-typing, word processing, desktop publishing, photo management, and video editing.  3. To learn how to market, sell products and mock advertisements.  To understand the importance of news, journalism principles and ethics.  To become well-rounded individuals

17 Volunteer Hours  Student may bring donated materials to my class or parents can volunteer time as well to receive hours.  Materials needed: - Copy Paper, white board eraser - Post-it Self Stick Easel Pad, 25 x 30.5, expo markers - Hand sanitizer, tissue, wipes, paper towels - Donate class novels - Candy for reward system

18 Volunteers: Field Trips  LEVEL 1 clearance is required for parents on field trips, as well as ANY incoming visitors.  As per the county policy, parents who are not chaperones are not cleared MAY NOT follow the bus.  All volunteers NEED to be cleared by the MDCPS to be on school grounds and volunteer. All parents must register online by August 26th!!  Policy from district: 30 hours per student, 15 additional hours per sibling, $5.00 = one hour if using a receipt.
