2. Colonial Expansion As time goes by migration to the colonies increases. In 1640, there were over 26,000 people living in the colonies. By 1750, there were almost 1.2 million.

3. Many colonists arrived as indentured servants. They will have their passage to the colonies paid for in exchange for seven years of service to the company/person who hired them.

4. Religious freedom will remain one of the reasons people migrated. In 1681, William Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania. His followers, Quakers, were tolerant of other religions and invited people of all beliefs to live in their colony.

5. As the colonies expand so too does the importation of African slaves. Between 1619 and 1760 about 210,000 slaves will be brought from Africa, primarily to work on the cash crops in the South.

6. The economies of the colonies continue to grow and thrive. The New England colonies will be focused on shipbuilding, lumber and trade, the Middle colonies trade, iron and lumber, and the Southern colonies will rely on cash crops.
