8 Oral/Spoken Language Language that is spoken and heard/listened to rather than written and read. Language has rules. Language is like a code: Encode – To assign meaning and language to data. 10 Characteristics of Oral/Spoken Language Vocabulary – All the word symbols that make up a particular code or language. Standards for Appropriateness: You need a large and flexible vocabulary to communicate appropriately in a variety of situations. You need a large collection of word symbols that appropriately express who you are. You need casual words for casual conversations and formal words for formal conversations. 11 Characteristics of Oral/Spoken Language Structure – The way the different parts of a language are arranged. Grammar – The basic understandings and rules that regulate the use of language. 12 Diction Diction – The degree of clarity and distinctness in a person’s speech. The way the words are spoken. 18 Formal Language Formal Language – Language associated with a particular profession, activity, or field of study. Jargon – Another name for technical language. 19 Informal Language Informal Language – Language most often used in casual situations and close interpersonal relationships. 33 Create a New Model of the Communication Process 1. Partnered Assignment: “The Communication Process Flyer” - Using the new and old terms (the ones I gave you) build/create/develop a new and more extensive model in a FLYER OR a GAME. Refer to the Vocabulary list on oral/spoken language. You will have 3 days. 2. Use your netbooks to create that new model – pictures, graphs, charts, colors, & explanations, be to show the original model’s terms. The FLYER or GAME should be the size of one or two ppt. frames if projected. 3. Be creative with Letter sizes and Fonts, etc. Stay within the copyright guidelines.
