3 Find the nouns in these sentences 1. Mr. Humbert was chasing the dog down the street. 2. All of the sudden, the dog bit Mr. Humbert. 3. Mr. Humbert held his arm and screamed. 4. The ambulance came and picked up Mr. Humbert.

5 So what are the functions, or jobs, of all the nouns? 1. Mr. Humbert was chasing the dog down the street. 2. All of the sudden, the dog bit Mr. Humbert. 3. Mr. Humbert held his arm and screamed. 4. The ambulance came and picked up Mr. Humbert.

6 So what is a direct object? (DO)  The noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb  The subject does the verb to the DO  The DO will come after the verb  S + V + DO  Not every verb has a DO

7 How to find the DO in a sentence  Find the verb and the subject  Read the sentence up to the verb  Then ask “what?” or “whom?”

8 Example  Andrea needed the batteries for an experiment. 1. Andrea needed 2. Andrea needed what? 3. Batteries=DO

9 Example 1. The art teacher displayed his students’ paintings in the hall. 2. The art teacher displayed 3. The art teacher displayed what? 4. paintings=DO

10 Example 1. The woman in the horror movie wore a long red dress. 2. The woman in the horror movie wore 3. The woman in the horror movie wore what? 4. dress=DO

11 Example 1. We walked for hours in the hot sun. 2. We walked 3. We walked what? 4. No answer=No DO Prep phrases cannot be subjects or DO; that’s a different noun job

12 Practice finding the direct object 1. Tribal warriors attacked their enemies with primitive weapons. 2. Ashley played a short tune on the violin. 3. The math students opened their books to chapter eight. 4. The voting computer will automatically record each choice.
