A nutrient is a chemical that you need to live and grow Ex. Fats, carbohydrates, protein, water, vitamins, minerals Most foods are full of nutrients You can find nutrient contents on a nutrition facts label

Essential nutrients: FatsCarbohydratesProteinsWater

Carbohydrates Provides energy for the body during digestion Should make up majority of your diet Can be divided into two categories Simple carbohydrates (sugars) Complex carbohydrates (starches)

Starches (a carb) Starches are generally more vitamin/mineral- rich foods that provide long-term energy You can find starches in grains, pasta, rice, and foods high in fiber Starches take longer to digest, and provide consistent & long-term energy Usually high in calories

Sugars (a carb) Sugars add sweetness to foods, and can be found naturally in apples, milk, maple syrup, etc. Sugars can also be found in processed foods such as candy and soda (look for “high fructose corn syrup”). Many of these sugary foods are low in vitamins and minerals. Sugars digest very rapidly in the body, and provide a quick burst of energy, followed by a sugar crash. sugar crash sugar crash

Critical question #1: You’re getting ready for a sporting event, and need to choose what to eat. You have the choice between a bowl of pasta or an apple. Explain your choice.

Fats Fats are necessary for life! Fats are concentrated, stored energy that your body can use when there is no other available food source (I like to use batteries as an analogy). Fats also store some vitamins and minerals for later use. Two categories of fats that you need to know: Saturated fats Unsaturated fats

Proteins Proteins are used to maintain body systems such as muscles and bones. They keep these systems from atrophying (atrophy is when something such as muscle wastes away because it’s not being used or proper nutrients arent’ being received through food) Should represent about 15% of your daily food intake You can find proteins in animal products and plants that resemble seeds

Calories Calories are energy that fuel our body. Without calories, you could not exist. In general, adults need 1,000 to 1,400 calories per day to have enough energy to fuel your body’s organs (heart, brain, lungs, liver, etc.). If you exceed the amount of calories you need in a day, you will gain weight because your body will store the calories as fat. *Flavia Herzog, RD

Nutrition Facts labels Define AND explain: Serving size % Daily Value Use the link below: Heart.org

Critical question #2: You’re headed to the pantry to grab a snack, but you remember you’re trying to lose weight. However, you need to eat so you know you should pick your snack wisely. What is the first thing you should look at on the nutrition facts label when you are making your choice, and why?

Critical question #3: Write down 3 healthy choices you make consistently concerning your diet …and… Write down 3 unhealthy choices you make consistently concerning your diet
