Objectives of the Session Students are expected to: -Write complete sentences using different types of verbs. -Describe some pictures.

Every English sentence must have a subject and a predicate. What is the subject of the sentence? The subject is that which we make a statement about. It may be a noun or a pronoun (Ali/He), a phrase (The man/The tall man), or it may be a phrase which is modified by a restrictive or non restrictive relative clause (The man who owned the restaurant …) Examine the following examples: 1- The girls with the blond hair are from Europe. 2- They have come to witness the Israeli crimes. 3- The instructor who is in charge of this course is very kind. Building the Sentence:

What is the predicate? The predicate, which contains a verb, tells the reader something about the subject. Note that English verbs are divided into two types: 1- Transitive verbs require object to complete the meaning and they are of three types: Mono transitive: Ali ate an apple. Dia-transitive: He gave Ali a book. Complex transitive: They appointed Ali (od)a chairman (co).

2- Intransitive verbs: can stand by itself to complete the meaning. Note the following examples: Ali came. She laughed. The linking verbs represent another type of English verbs. They tell us what the subject is. ( verb to be, appear, sound, look, taste, feel, remain, become) -He remained sad after his wife’s death. -He becomes a teacher. She is a doctor.

Types of English Sentences: According to complexity English sentences are divided into four types: 1- Simple Sentence: - I play football every day. - The three boys were playing football at that moment 2- Compound Sentence: - Ali was singing and Ahmad was dancing. - The boys were happy but their parents were thinking about their miserable situation. 3- Complex Sentence: - While I was sleeping, the telephone rang. - If I were you, I would speak to my father as soon as it possible.

4- Compound Complex Sentence: - Ali gave Soha everything, and she left him as she found a new job. - The students were writing their homework, and the headmaster monitored them while they were delivering it to their teacher. According to grammatical form, English sentences are divided into four major syntactic classes. 1- Declarative sentence: - The president travelled to Egypt. 2- Interrogative Sentence: - What language can you speak? 3- Imperative Sentence: - Open the door. - Do your assignment at once.
