2  The election of 1828 pits John Quincy Adams against Andrew Jackson  Both were Democratic – Republicans  The Party splits – one side supporting Adams the other supporting Jackson  One of the dirtiest presidential campaigns in U.S. History  Both Jackson and Adams attacked one another personally more than they focused on policy issues.

3 Jackson and his followers form The Democratic Party Adams and his supporters form The National Republican Party Jackson claimed to represent the common man Slandered Adams by saying: Adams was a pimp for the Czar of Russia Adams was using the White House to promote gambling. Neither was true of Adams Adams was accused of representing the wealthy and better educated Slandered Jackson by: Accusing Jackson of being married to a harlot Pointing out that Jackson was a murder. These were mostly true statements about Jackson

4  Andrew Jackson’s practice, after winning an election, of giving government jobs to his supporters, friends and relatives as a reward for working toward victory.  To the winner goes the spoils (spoils of war)  This is also known as a patronage system  Is this a good practice?  How could this lead to governmental corruption or event tyranny?
