Human Reproductive System

Function of the reproductive system 1.To carry on the species and reproduce 2.Male reproductive cell – sperm 3.Female reproductive cell – egg (ova)

Male Reproductive System

Male Reproductive System Organs 1.Testes – produce sperm and testosterone 2.Scrotum – holds testes, temperature control 3.Penis – used to put sperm into female body 4.Urethra – carry’s urine and semen (at separate times) out of the body 5.Vas Deferens – transports sperm up to Urethra 6.Prostate gland, Cowper’s gland & Seminal vesicle – creates fluids for semen Mrs. Degl

Sperm Formation 1.Formed in the testes by MEIOSIS 2.Semen is sperm plus protective fluid from glands 3. Semen leaves testes through the vas deferens to the urethra before it exits.

Secondary Sexual Characteristics - Male 1. Induced by testosterone –Deeper voice –Chest and facial hair –Lengthen bones

Mrs. Degl Female Reproductive System

Female Reproductive System Organs 1.Ovaries – produce eggs (ova) and estrogen 2.Fallopian tubes – long tube leading from ovaries to uterus 3.Uterus– where the baby develops if egg is fertilized by the sperm 4.Cervix– opening leading from uterus to vagina 5.Vagina – muscular canal (birth canal) leading from uterus to outside

Egg (Ovum) Formation 1.Formed in ovaries by MEIOSIS 2.Eggs are formed before birth - Females are born with eggs 3.Once mature, an egg per month released from ovaries -Sometimes more than one egg is released (fraternal twins) 4.If egg is fertilized, (zygote) it will implant in the uterus and develop

Secondary Sexual Characteristics - Female 1. Induced by increased estrogen, and progesterone hormone levels –Pubic hair –Widen pelvis –Enlarge mammary tissue (breasts) –Begin menstrual cycles

Fraternal vs. Identical twins 1.Fraternal twins – more than one egg was released and they are fertilized by different sperm. - Just like normal brothers/sister but born at the same time 2.Identical twins – one egg is fertilized by one sperm. When cells start to divide, for some reason the cells separate and become 2 brothers or 2 sisters

Exit questions 1.The female sex cell is a(n) ______. 2.The male sex cell is a(n) ________. 3.The purpose of the reproductive system is…..
