1 LEE BURNESON MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT April 27, 2016

2 TONIGHT’S GOALS: -TESTING UPDATE -DISCUSS 2016/17 SCHEDULE -DISCUSS CURRICULUM OPTIONS -EXPLAIN THE 2016/17 SCHEDULING PROCEDURE ANSWER QUESTIONS

3 TESTING UPDATE Due to a grading delay the test results have not been sent home yet. Scores should be mailed by next Monday. This will have no impact on scheduling as it occurs in May.

4 2016/17 BELL SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS Student day is 8:30-3:24 There is no music/non music option this year!!!! World Language will look a little different. It will be opposite of Pre- Engineering & Art in some cases. Intervention is offered 2-3 days a week. Intervention is for students with an identified deficiency in LA/Math/Reading. CORE classes will be 60 minutes in length World Language is 40 minutes/5 times a day Music/PE/Tech (Green Block) is 55 minutes/day

6 What to expect with the scheduling procedure? REQUIRED CORE CURRICULUM Language Arts Math Science Social Studies World Language If you take Music you get: -4 days per week of music and 1 day per week of Physical Education If you do not take music you get: -12 weeks of Music Appreciation, 12 Weeks of Physical Education, and 12 weeks of Technology class

7 Language Arts Placement If you are identified as Gifted in reading or have a “Superior Cognitive designation” you automatically qualify for the Advanced Language Arts class. All other students are placed in 8 th Grade Language Arts. We will work to “cluster group” students of similar ability. Appeals are possible. The appeal form will be on the LBMS website by Friday afternoon.

8 Math Placement Students are given the IAAT Test (Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test) 7 th graders taking Algebra I will take Honors Geometry in 8 th grade 7 th grade students that took Math 7B/8 will take Math 8 or Algebra I in 8th grade it is dependent on the test scores. Math 7 students typically go to Math 8. However, some qualify for advancement in algebra I

9 Science Placement 7 th grade students were given the Iowa Test of Basic Skills Assessment Students that score a 92 percentile or higher will be placed in Honors Physical Science Students with a 91 or lower will be placed in Science 8 We will look to cluster group Science 8 next year. This will create a more intense science 8 class for those students that just missed the qualification.

10 2016/2017 World Language Offerings 8 th Grade students will continue in their current language. Spanish or French. WL has different options next year: Level 1 which is full year, 5 days per week. Very intense language immersion Semester class for.5 credit Opposite of Pre-Engineering and Art Semester class (no credit) Opposite of Pre-Engineering and Art

11 APPEAL PROCESS This is an example of what the appeal will say. Appeal Forms are located at wlake.org/schools/lbms Appeal forms have to be submitted in person within 30 days of receipt of the scores PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL THE FORMS
