2  Why teach with STEM???  The reason why STEM (science, math, engineering, and technology education) is such an important part of my education philosophy is because students gains the skills and knowledge through the use of problem based, hands-on learning. STEM concentrates on the fields that are already deeply intertwined with the real world therefore preparing your student for a promising future.

3  I. A: Day 1: I Spy: Students will identify and search for models in I-Spy activity  B: Day 2: Students make 2-D models of ‘my home from the front door’  C: Day 3: In groups of two to three students will go on the Internet and look through magazines to research photos of homes from different perspectives. They will search for images of homes from the front door, from a tall building, from an airplane, and from outer space.  D: Day 4: The students will create four drawings to model the students’ homes: seen from the front door, from a tall building, from an airplane, and from space. They will write an explanatory text for each.  E: Day 5: Read There’s No Place Like Space!, by Dr. Suess. Have the whole class participate and take turns reading. Ask the students if they know what a planet is. Tell them that they know one planet very well, the Earth. See if they know the names of any of the other planets.  F. Day 6: The Earth and Sun – A Play in Two Acts In this activity, the class creates an Earth-Sun orrery  G. Day: 7: Internet Search and Solar System Puzzle - Students construct the Voyage scale model puzzle to sequence the Sun and planets.

9  Assessment Rubric  4 Points ◗ Clearly and consistently demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the concepts nearly 100% of the time by applying them accurately in activities, questions, comments, work, and projects both in the classroom and elsewhere.  3 Points ◗ Shows a nearly complete grasp of the concepts by using them appropriately at least 75% of the time in class, asking pertinent questions, and by making viable attempts at applying the concepts to other aspects of learning.  2 Points ◗ Responds correctly to direct questions regarding the meaning of the concepts, but cannot yet express them or demonstrate them consistently and accurately; still makes errors about 50% of the time.  1 Point ◗ Indicates little more than random guessing at understanding the concepts; cannot focus on essential elements or regularly respond correctly to leading questions; less than 50% accurate.  0 Points ◗ No work completed.
