Conflict in Cuba In the late 1800’s, Cuba wanted independence from Spain Jose Marti worked for Cuba’s independence after he was exiled—called for a revolt in Cuba Marti’s revolt was put down and he died in battle Cuban farmers were put into concentration camps so they couldn’t help fight against Spain

4. The Sinking of the Maine The U.S. sent the USS Maine to Cuba to protect U.S. lives and property The Maine exploded and a U.S. newspaper blamed the explosion on Spain even though there was no proof—Congress declared war on Spain The Spanish were quickly defeated by Cuban and U.S. soldiers

The Platt Amendment The U.S. ended the Spanish American War by defeating the Spanish in the Philippines In the Platt Amendment, the U.S. received the right to intervene in Cuba and was allowed to build a naval base at Guantanamo Bay The U.S. got control over the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam
