2 Completing the course doesn’t guarantee employment. Most employers will re-evaluate your swimming strengths before deciding to hire you. You’ll need to practice the skills learned frequently even after the course has completed.

3 What do you think should be included in an orientation session for new lifeguards at a facility? Features of a facility that differ from where the LG was trained Job Responsibilities Facility Operations Management Expectations Rules that need to be enforced.

4 Annual or Preseason Training Most occur just prior to summer. Review your knowledge – LG Skills – CPR/AED – First Aid – Facility-Specific Protocols Facilities must meet government requirements (i.e. Blood Born Pathogens)

5 Policy and Procedure Manuals Administrative policies and job descriptions Facility Rules and Emergency Procedures Personnel policies – Uniform requirements – Scheduling info – Evaluation process

6 In-Service Training Most facilities require 4 hours of in-service a month. Topics include: Surveillance and recognition, water and land rescues, emergency response drills, decision- making protocol, rules and regulations, customer service, records and reports, physical conditioning.

7 Evaluations Periodic evaluations are performed by employers or outside agencies. Announced or unannounced Include surveillance, skills and operations.

9 Being Part of a Team Pretzel Activity What strategy did you use? Who were your biggest leaders? Did you plan and reach a consensus? One leader? Multiple Leaders? What would you change?

10 Communication Effective communication, trust, mutual respect, commitment and cooperation are crucial elements for working successfully as a team.

11 What can you do to have a positive effect the LG team? Get to work on time. Rotate stations on time. Attend in-service training. Enforce rules. Communicate clearly and w respect. Be prepared. Complete secondary responsibilities in a timely fashion.

12 Emergency Action Plan Abbv. EAP Actions of LGs and other team members in an emergency. Lists what needs to be done and who does it. Safety Team is not just those at your facility but also the local emergency response team.

13 Rescue Equipment Must wear or carry at all times. Rescue Tube Resuscitation Mask Gloves First Aid Kit (Your facility will give you a hip pack.)

14 Why should you wear a hip pack whether or not you are on surveillance? To be prepared for an emergency at all times.

15 Safety and Emergencies You’re conducting your opening duties and you find a loose bolt on a pool ladder. What should you do? Document the bolt and report it. Identify the specific ladder and bolt. Fix the problem before the facility opens. If it can’t be fixed, block off that area so no one can use it.

16 Safety and Emergencies You’re on duty conducting patron surveillance and someone reports to you shampoo was spilled in the locker room and the floor is very slippery. What should you do? Thank the patron. Clarify the specific location. Signal for assistance of a team member not on surveillance so they can get it taken care of.

17 Weather Conditions Management monitors weather and keeps LG posted. LGs alert management if they see indications of severe weather. Clear patrons from the water and deck.

18 Lightning and Thunder Clear the water at the first sound of thunder or sight of lightning. Get off elevated stations. Move everyone to a safe are free of water, plumbing or electrical circuits. Move inside if possible. Stay out of showers and locker rooms during thunderstorms. Keep away from windows and metal objects. Continuously assess the weather situation. Wait 30 minutes after the last lightning sighting or sound of thunder.

19 Outside in a thunderstorm Keep away from tall trees or other structures. Keep away from water or metal objects. Keep as low to the ground as possible but don’t lay on the ground: Squat or crouch with knees up, feet together and hands off the ground.
