Place these into two categories. Name both categories. Oil Wind Copper coal trees grapes cotton diamonds oranges corn

Turn to page 68 in textbook. Also, turn to page 4 in Study Book. What did all 10 of those items have in common?

Natural Resources  The one thing all 10 of those items had in common….  Natural Resources  Read page 68.  “Most natural resources are raw materials for other products.”  Raw materials are natural resources that are changed to be useful. Example – cotton is a raw material for t-shirts. Any material found in naturethat people use and value

Place these into two categories. Name both categories. Oil Wind Copper coal trees grapes cotton diamonds corn

Natural Resources  There are two categories of natural resources. Renewable Nonrenewable  Read 1 st paragraph on pg. 69  Renewable resources are natural resources that the Earth replaces naturally. Ex. Trees, soil, wind, solar energy, bananas. **most are ALIVE. Natural Resources Renewable Resources – Earth replaces naturally Nonrenewable Resources – animalsplants Wind power solar power

Natural Resources  The 2 nd category is Nonrenewable resources  Nonrenewable resources are those that the earth cannot replace. Examples: coal, nickel, iron, gold, oil Natural Resources Renewable Resources – Earth replaces naturally Nonrenewable Resources – Earth does not replace animalsplants Wind power solar power gold diamonds Other minerals

Natural Resources  Fossil Fuels: nonrenewable resources that are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals.  The main fossil fuels are:  Coal  Petroleum (Oil)  Natural Gas Natural Resources Nonrenewable Resources – Earth does not replace gold diamonds Other minerals Fossil fuels CoalPetroleum (oil) Natural gas

Bellwork: Friday, Sept. 14 th 1.What is the object? 2.For what purpose is it used? Then, number your paper 3-10.

List these as “Renewable” or “Nonrenewable” 3. Copper 4. Gold 5. Water 6. Wind 7. Solar energy 8. Trees 9. Cotton 10. Oil  3. Nonrenewable  4. Nonrenewable  5. Renewable  6. Renewable  7. Renewable  8. Renewable  9. Renewable  10. Nonrenewable

Forms of Energy (page 5) Nonrenewable forms of energy 1.Coal – burned to create electricity  Cheap and easy to get/lots in United States  Will run out some day  Pollutes air 2.Petroleum (oil) – used for fuels, plastics, cosmetics, etc  Pollutes air  Will run out some day  Most in the Middle East 3.Natural gas – burned for heating homes, stoves, water heaters, etc.  Cleanest burning fossil fuel  Will run out some day
