Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin is one of the most outstanding painters all over the world. Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was a painter who combined many traditions of world art in his work and created an original language in painting that was both deeply individual and national in spirit.

K.S. Petrov-Vodkin's art-memorial museum The art-memorial museum occupies two buildings: K.S. Petrov-Vodkin's house-museum and the picture gallery of K.S. Petrov-Vodkin. Both buildings are architecture monuments. The picture gallery of K.S. Petrov is the brick one-storeyed building in the centre of the town with a semi-basement.

K.S. Petrov-Vodkin's house-museum K.S. Petrov-Vodkin's house-museum is a semilog house constructed in 1896. K.S. Petrov-Vodkin had bought the house in 1905. The house belonged to the parents and a family of the artist till 1943. At the house there are outdoor constructions: sheds, a summer kitchen, a bath and a small garden.

Petrov-Vodkin Street This street in Khvalynsk is named in honour of the greatest painter and writer Kuzma S. Petrov-Vodkin.

Biography Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was born in Khvalynsk into the family of a local shoemaker. His began to paint in his early childhood, when he took some lessons from icon painters and a sign maker. He took a summer job at a small shipyard with plans to get into railroad college in Samara. K. Petrov-Vodkin studied at "Art Classes of Fedor Burov" in Samara. From 1895 to 1897 Petrov-Vodkin stayed in Saint Petersburg studying at the Baron Stieglits School, before moving to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. There Petrov-Vodkin was a student of Valentin Serov, Isaak Levitan and especially K. Korovin. He travelled to Munich to take classes with Anton Azbe.

Bathing of a Red Horse, 1912 (oil on canvas) This painting became for contemporaries a symbol of the coming social changes. It conveys the “spirit of the times.” The artist managed to combine the traditions of Russian icons, early Italian frescoes and neo-Classical traditions. The plot was simple: young boys bathing horses in a pond. The colors were bright and clear with dominating red. At first glance, the scene seems quiet, even static, but tension can be felt. The painting is built on contrasts, and their interaction conveys that tension to the viewer. The painting "Bathing of a Red Horse" made Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin very famous.

In 1918-1919, the artist created a series of still lives, such as “Morning Still Life,” “Herring,” “A Glass and a Lemon,” “Violin,” “A Branch of an Apple Tree” and many more. According to Petrov-Vodkin, a still life is “a conversation between an artist and his subject” in which “the plot does not distract from the definition of the subject in the space. What this subject is like, where it is and where I am, perceiving this subject - that is a main meaning of still life.”

In the 1920s, Petrov-Vodkin continued to work on perspective and composition. He experimented with colours, uniting all forms and grounds with the three main colors - red, yellow and blue. In his works during the Soviet period, Petrov-Vodkin tried to express a high humanistic sense of life and painted many portraits. He placed the individual traits of a person in the background. In his paintings, the subject was presented as a quiet and thoughtful observer who blends harmonically into his or her environment. This brilliant self-portrait by Kuzma Petrov- Vodkin is one more demonstration of the indisputable genius of this great master, whose influence on Russian art was truly boundless.

"Khlynovsk" is distinguished by the free manner of narration, abundant sharply noticed by a sight of the artist details, giving a special charm to this captivating and full of events vital prose. "Khlynovsk" is the first part of an autobiographical sequel "My story" (the second part is "Euclid's Space").

K. S. Petrov-Vodkin's autobiographical story «Euclid's Space» was written in 1930. It indicates not only about art, but also about literary talent of the artist. Original, bright language, in which live intonation of the verbal story is saved, helps the reader to feel an originality of perception and richness of the impressions received by Petrov-Vodkin from meetings with interesting people and foreign trips. The text is accompanied by the drawings of the author.
