1 Ancient Rome  When we discussed ancient Rome earlier this year, we learned that it grew into one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen!

2 Ancient Rome  The ancient Romans made many lasting contributions to the world.  They created the republic, a type of government in which people elect representatives to govern them.  This is the type of government we have in the USA!  Many languages developed from Latin, the language of the Romans. These are called the Romance languages and include Spanish, French, and Italian. These languages are still spoken all over the world!

4 Problems in Ancient Rome  Bad leadership  Less government power for the people  No reliable system for choosing emperors, so fighting took place over who would become leader  Financial (money) problems  Food shortages  High unemployment  Crime, riots, and other kinds of civil unrest  Military defeats  Invasions/attacks by outsiders Which of these problems do we also have in the US? Put a by the problems that we share.

9 The Western Roman Empire, due to a wide variety of problems (money, invasions, corruption, bad leaders, starvation, unemployment, etc.), fell apart and was divided into many small kingdoms. The Eastern Roman Empire, though, grew in wealth and power and ended up being known as the Byzantine Empire. 13 What was the Byzantine Empire and why was it important?  The society that developed in the Eastern Roman Empire.  It was important because it was a major trading center.

15 What was his main goal? Did he accomplish it?  Wanted to reunite the old Roman Empire  Bringing the East and West back together Green: Byzantine Empire at the beginning Purple: Land that Justinian took over for the Byzantine Empire

16 What were some of Justinian’s other accomplishments?  Justinian’s Code – he simplified Roman laws to make sure all people were treated fairly.  Built many beautiful buildings, including the famous Church of Hagia Sophia

17 Who was Theodora and why was she important?  Justinian’s wife  Convinced him to fight against people trying to overthrow him.  Helped him restore power, beauty, and strength of the Empire.  Created laws to help women and children and to end corruption.

18 What group of people captured the city of Constantinople? When did this happen? Why was this important?  The Ottoman Turks captured Constantinople in 1453 A.D.  This brought an end to the Eastern Roman Empire The Ottoman Turks…captured the area where Turkey is located…Get it? It’s actually NOT named after the bird!
