8 Responsible Peer Relationships pages 124-128 During adolescence, your relationships with other people begin to change. You depend less on your parents and other adults to make decisions for you.

9 Responsible Peer Relationships By being with different people, you practice your skills at socializing, getting along with and communicating with other people. Partner activity: Describe situations in which you learn to get along with each age group of people. People who are your own age Young children—ages 3 to 5 years Young people –ages 6-10 years Adults who are your parents age Elderly adults

10 What is dating? Types of Dating You and your friends may use the word “dating” or you may not. People describe relationships in different ways. Whatever you call it, we want you to understand and feel comfortable with whatever type of relationship you are in. Some of the most commonly used words to describe dating are: Going out Together Being with someone Seeing each other Hubby/wifey status Just friends Friends with benefits Hooking up Regardless of the label you use, you and your partner should both accept the same definition for your relationship

11 Our definition of dating Spending time with people or a person of the opposite sex in order to get to know them better.

12 Dating, “Hanging out with someone”, or “going with someone” Dating can help you learn more about relating to people of the opposite gender. It can help you learn about yourself as well. Not all teens your age want to date or feel ready to date. Some teens are shy, and the idea of dating makes them nervous. It is a good idea to date only when you’re ready. If anyone pressures you into dating, you probably will not have fun.

13 Group Dating Group dating, going out with male and female friends at the same time, is popular among teens. There may be an equal number of boys and girls, there may be more girls than boys, or more boys than girls. Going out in a group is a good way to ease into dating. Many young people are more comfortable going to parties, movies, and dances in groups. What’s more, going out with the group can be a lot of fun.

18 Individual Dating When you go out with a group, you may begin to develop special feelings about one person. You may want to spend more time with that person alone rather than with the group. Whether you are with a group or with one other person, you are responsible for your behavior. Responsible dating means being trustworthy, showing respect for the other person, and thinking ahead about the consequences of your actions. Partner activity: How does honesty and good communication affect your relationship with someone you like to spend time with?

19 Making responsible decisions Most parents or guardians show love and concern for their children by setting limits and establishing guidelines. Because parents want to protect their teens’ self respect, values, and safety, they do not want their teens to be sexually active. Responsible teens show respect for their parents or guardians when they practice abstinence from sexual activity before marriage.

20 Responsible Peer Relationships During your teen years physical attraction for another person can increase. It is easier, however, to decide on what limits you will set before you are in a situation that is difficult to control. You can decide to avoid behaviors that arouse sexual feelings. You can also avoid situations that make it more difficult to use self-control.

21 Responsible Peer Relationships Speaking with a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult about this important issue will help. He or she can offer suggestions for demonstrating affection in safe and healthy ways, such as  Hugging or holding hands  Doing something nice for the other person  Giving compliments  Giving cards or small gifts  Writing poems or letters

22 Responsible Peer Relationships pages 124-128 By practicing abstinence you show that you care about your welfare. When you choose abstinence you know that sex will never become the focus of your relationship. Instead, you establish a relationship based on trust, caring, and friendship. More and more teens choose abstinence from sexual activity for the following reasons:  To avoid the risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases  To avoid the risk of unplanned pregnancy  Because they believe that they should wait until they are married  Because it makes their relationships less complicated  Because they want others to respect them and their values  To give themselves time to explore other aspects of their relationships  To focus on planning and working toward their future  For religious and moral reasons

23 Ways to Say “NO” There may be times when you feel pressured by your peers to participate in an unsafe activity. Remind yourself that it is your life, not anyone else’s. You can make your own choices. It will help you to practice how you will say no before you find yourself under pressure. Here are some ways you can say “no”.  I’m just not ready for a sexual relationship.  I want to respect my parents’ wishes.  If you loved me, you wouldn’t pressure me.  I’m not ready to be a parent.  I want to wait until I’m married.  I want to concentrate on my studies right now.  I don’t want to risk getting a sexually transmitted disease.
