12 UNIT 6: Lesson 1 Prepare 1. Identify forms of nonlistening in personal and professional situations Wood describes six forms of nonlistening (p.156-160): 1.Pseudolistening: Pretending to listen when we want to appear attentive. 2.Monopolizing: Continuously redirecting the conversation away from what others are trying to communicate and toward our concerns. 3.Selective listening: Focusing only on aspects of communications that interest us and ignoring those that bore or disturb us. 4.Defensive listening: Perceiving criticism or hostility in communications directed at us when there is no criticism or hostility intended. 5.Ambushing: Listening carefully solely for the purpose of attacking the speaker. 6.Literal listening: Listening for content and ignoring relationship level meaning.

13 UNIT 6: Lesson 1 Practice Frances: We were in Chicago and attended the Lyric Opera. Bernard: That’s in that old opera building on the river, right? Frances: Yes. The acoustics are great. The tenor playing Tristan was magnificent. Bernard: How many people does the auditorium seat? Frances: I don’t know. We were 12 rows back on the main floor. The sound was unforgettable. Have you seen Tristan and Isolde? Bernard: It must be hard to get all those people in and out with all the construction going on there. Frances: Well, you get there early and buy a ticket for the box dinner between acts. Ever see an opera at the Lyric? Bernard: Imagine having to make all those box dinners! Monopolizing Ambushing Defensive listening Selective listening Pseudolistening Literal listening ITEM 1: Which form of nonlistening best explains Bernard’s approach to this conversation? 1. Identify forms of nonlistening in personal and professional situations

14 UNIT 6: Lesson 2 Prepare Wood presents three Guidelines for Effectively Listening that summarize the concepts in Chapter 6: 1.Being mindful involves paying complete attention to what is happening in an interaction without imposing our own thoughts, feelings, or judgments. 2.Adapting listening appropriately requires knowing our purpose for listening, the context, and the needs and circumstances of the person to whom we are listening. Wood discusses three reasons for listening: for pleasure, for information, and to support others. The textbook details the attitudes and skills required for each (p.160-164). 3.Listen actively means investing the effort needed to apply effective listening skills and to become an active partner in reaching mutual understanding. 2. Apply the principles of mindful listening to improve communication effectiveness
