1 On-Campus Preschool How to create and run a successful preschool on your high school campus!

2  Provide students with resume building, hands-on experience while still in high school  CTE prep for college and career  Encourage learning at a higher lever  Bloom’s Taxonomy – Application, analysis, creating, evaluating  Webb’s Depth of Knowledge – Strategic and extended thinking  Community service for local families and children Why Create an On-Campus Preschool?

3  Create a webpage that is linked to your high school website (example: Tiny Vikes Preschool Website)Tiny Vikes Preschool Website  Distribute flyers to local elementary schools to be sent home in weekly folders  Post flyers at local stores and shopping centers  Email the staff and invite them to forward to family and friends Advertising

4  Promote your preschool on campus through morning announcements and/or media productions  Attend your 8 th grade showcase night to promote program to incoming freshmen  Post signage on your classroom door and window  Trick-or-Treating to classrooms on campus on Halloween  Create a Facebook page and post weekly pictures  Obtain a release from parents before posting  Like my page - OHSChildDevelopmentOHSChildDevelopment Promotion

5  If you have a website, create a Google Form to enroll children (example: Tiny Vikes Preschool Enrollment Form)Tiny Vikes Preschool Enrollment Form  Enroll children from the local community on a first-come, first- served basis  Children must be at least 3 and fully potty trained  Parents must provide a copy of child’s immunization records  Set a maximum number of children you can accommodate, then start a waiting list  Set up a group email to contact parents easily – they like to hear from you often!  Start enrolling early to ensure a full preschool for your high school students Enrolling Children

6  Students must have a clear TB test to work in the preschool  The school nurse gives one free test to each student enrolled in the class  Students must pass Health before taking Child Development  Students must pass a written quiz on teacher requirements and the preschool schedule before working with the children Prerequisites for High School Students

7  An on-campus preschool is funded out of your department budget  Work with your VP over facilities to purchase the furniture – small tables with chairs, a large carpet for circle time, and storage/cubbies  The preschool is free to the community since it is a high school child care program  Parents are asked to make donations of craft and snack supplies – I send out “wish lists” on an as-needed basis Funding your Preschool

8  Apply to your school’s parent/booster club to purchase large items  Work with the Industrial Arts Department to build a shelf for toys and books  Email the staff and ask for specific donations  Once you are running your preschool, offer Scholastic Book Orders to the preschool parents.  Every order by a parent = free books for your preschool library!  Ask family and friends for age-appropriate toys and books their kids have outgrown Great Resources

9  Shop on Craigslist for inexpensive, big-ticket items like a play kitchen, tool bench, doll house, etc.  Get creative! Decorate the preschool with handmade items.  Follow me on Pinterest to see lots of ideas organized by theme.Pinterest More Resources

12  Train high school students to teach preschool during the first month of the semester  Students choose partners then divide the class in half (A or B, Blue or White, etc.)  Groups alternate working in preschool – prep week then preschool week  Preschool block plan and time schedule are provided  Lesson plans and specific activities are written and planned by students (with guidance) Preschool Implementation

13  Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday  10:10 – 12:20 during Per. 2 and Per. 3 (traditional block schedule)  Preschool is open 11 weeks in the fall and 13 weeks in the spring  Preschool is closed in December and January for careers unit, finals, winter break, and new teacher training  Preschool graduation is the first week of May Preschool Days & Times

14 Preschool Routine Per. 2  Set up  Check-in/Free Play  Circle Time  Story Time  Science  Center 1  Arts & Crafts – fine motor skills  Snack  Passing Period  Preschoolers stay seated at tables

15 Preschool Routine Per. 3  Clean up Snack  Free Play  Singing Time  Center 2  Reading or math readiness  Center 3  Group games/gross motor skill activities  Check-out  Clean up  After the mid-term, Per. 2 & 3 switch jobs

16  Review week with entire class  What went well?  What needs work?  Specific questions or comments about children  Preschool group completes lesson plans and self- evaluations reflecting on their work that week to go in portfolios  Prep group cleans, organizes, and decorates preschool for new theme Friday Review
