1 Welcome to KU 121 Unit 8 Seminar Louisa Fordyce Lfordyce@kaplan.edu IM user ID: LRFordyce Office Hours by appointment

2 Quiz Review  Here are a couple of concepts you need to know for the quiz:  What does it mean to revise?  Are revising and editing the same thing?

3 Question for the class  Does an early draft version of an essay include complete sentences, full paragraphs, and correct punctuation?

Question  What is a tutor at the Writing Center? 4

5 And the answer is----  Yes!!!  Even though it is a draft, it’s important to follow the standards of proper English.  It’s a good habit to get into and will improve your writing in all areas of your life.

6 And the answer is----  Tutor – A Kaplan University instructor (but not necessarily YOUR instructor) employed by the Writing Center to work with students and provide essay reviews free of charge.

7 Question  What is the purpose of a live tutor?

8 And the answer is----  Live Tutoring – The process of working one on one with a virtual tutor from the KU Writing Center. This process is NOT required in Unit 8 or your classes but it is suggested throughout the course

9 Question  Are you REQUIRED to work with a live tutor in Unit 8?

10 And the answer is---  No, you are not required to work with a live tutor in Unit 8.

11 Question  What is the idea behind essay review?

12 And the answer is----  Essay review – The asynchronous, free process where students submit drafts to the Writing Center and receive feedback from a tutor; this process IS required in Unit 8.

13 Question  You are not required to use a Live Tutor in this class. But are you required to use the Writing Center in Unit 8?

14 And the answer is---  Yes, you are.  You are to submit your draft to the Writing Center for feedback.  Please look at the Reading section of Unit 8.  There are samples of the kind of the feedback you will receive from the Writing Center.

15 Unit 8 Project  Unit 8’s Project is pretty simple.  Upload your draft from Unit 7.  Your draft will be returned from the WC looking pretty much like the assignments you get back from me.  I use marginal comments, too.  You can remove these from both me and the WC.  Place your cursor on the comment and right click. You can delete the comment.

Unit 8 Project  When you receive the report from the WC, you have to write one well- developed paragraph of at least 5-7 sentences detailing your revision plan for your essay. 16

17 Question  What is revision?

18 And the answer is----  Revision – Part of the writing process that involves “re-thinking” your writing and critically evaluating both what you say and how you say it.

19 Question  What is a revision plan?

20  Revision plan – Steps for revision that include specific goals and activities designed to enhance certain areas of an essay.

21 Question  At this point, what is your revision plan for your final project?  What steps will you take to revise your draft for the final submission?

22 Hints  Follow your instructor’s comments on your returned draft.  Follow the comments from the Writing Center.  Ask questions if you don’t understand something.  In your paragraph for the Unit 8 project, detail how you will use the comments from the WC, from your instructor, and even from your classmates in the Discussion as to how you will revise your draft for the final submission.

23 Question  What are some things you will need to be on the look out for as you revise?

24  Make sure you have complete sentences.  Make sure that all words that need a cap have a cap. That means all sentences and all proper nouns should start with a capital letter.  Make sure punctuation is correct.  Make sure spelling is correct.

25 The WC is a free service for Kaplan students.  I don’t know about you, but I really like FREE things.

26  So take advantage of the Writing Center in your next classes.  It can help you a great deal to improve your writing and therefore your grades.

27  Questions?????

MWL: Apostrophes Apostrophes have two functions: they indicate contractions and they show possession. Contractions are can’t (cannot), don’t (do not), shouldn’t (should not), I’m (I am), and so on. You already know this, I’m sure. Possessives, on the other hand, give us some trouble. Possessives use an –s and the apostrophe either before or after the –s depending on whether the word is singular or plural. 28

 The girl’s books = one girl and the books that belong to her.  There is only one person so the apostrophe is between the word and the –s.  The girls’ books = more than one girl and the books that belong to them.  There is more than one person. Make the word plural with an –s then add the apostrophe 29

 The problems arise when a word should just be plural with an –s instead of showing possession. One way to determine if a word should just be a plural instead of a possessive is to determine what kind of word follows it. “The books belong on the shelf.” In this sentence, “books,” a noun, is followed by “belong,” a verb. When you have a noun that ends in –s and it is followed by a verb, chances are good that it should just be a plural form of the noun and not a possessive. Examples: The cats like to drink milk. The boys ran up the hill. 30

 If a noun that ends in –s is followed by another noun, then chances are good that the first noun needs an apostrophe: Mary’s shoes = the shoes that belong that Mary. Examples: Bill’s shoes are in the doorway again! This could be rephrased to say, The shoes that belong to Bill are in the doorway again! Cathy’s hair looks nice today. This could be rephrased to, The hair that belongs to Cathy looks nice today. 31

 Beware of nouns that form odd plurals without an –s. Child = children, woman = women, and so on. Since the word is already plural, the apostrophe is between the end of the word and the –s. Examples: The children’s toys are on the floor. Women’s coats are on the fifth floor of the department store. 32
