{ What is the Scientific Method?

6 steps

 Identify the PROBLEM—this is what you the scientist wants to know and is ALWAYS a QUESTION  Would a plant grow faster if it received more CO2? Breaking down the steps

 Before you construct a Hypothesis you need to educate yourself on the information and have a truly educated guess or a hypothesis based on correct and accurate information. FIND OUT ALL YOU CAN ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF YOUR QUESTION!!!  Now based on your question we need to find some information…like what is the relationship between CO2 and plants? Background Research

 A hypothesis is an educated guess.  A statement using IF, THEN and BECAUSE that explains a set of facts and can be tested.  The hypothesis is not valid unless you are able to prove it true or false.  What is our Hypothesis? If a plant receives more concentrated amounts of CO2 then it will grow faster because plants require CO2 for growth. Hypothesis

 Construct an experiment that can test your hypothesis and show data that can prove or disprove it.  Get answers/ Information/Data based on activities that can prove or disprove your guess. Test with an experiment!

IN AN EXPERIMENT YOU WILL HAVE… IN AN EXPERIMENT YOU WILL HAVE… Control Control  what is held constant in the experiment  Something used as a standard of comparison in an experiment  Independent Variable  Variable that is only changed by person doing the experiment  Dependent Variable  Variable that changes depending on the independent variable

OBSERVE and RECORD  Take the data from the experiment and break apart to see if the data supports or disproves your hypothesis.  What did the CO2/PLANT experiment show?

CONCLUSION  Conclusion  Two options  Option A  Report findings come up with a conclusion  End result; right or wrong  Option B  Report Findings then alter or fix your hypothesis  Go back to the hypothesis step and do the process again
