Current Affairs 1: The Danger of the Monster Myth Jill Meagher was a 29-year-old woman who was raped and murdered while walking home from a pub in Melbourne. Adrian Ernest Bayley pleaded guilty to Meagher's rape and murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Bayley had an “extensive history of rape and violence”. Article written by Tom Meagher called “The Danger of the Monster Myth” – READ “The major difficulties in mobilising this kind of outrage on a regular basis is that most cases of men’s violence against women: 1) Lack the ingredients of an archetypal villain and a relatable victim, 2) Are perpetrated and suffered in silence and 3) Are perpetrated by somebody known to the victim.”

Current Affairs 1: The Danger of the Monster Myth Public reaction and role of media in the issue Social media outlets, including Twitter and Facebook, played a significant role in bringing the case to prominence and in helping with the police investigation As a result of the social media response the Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, suggested that law reform might be necessary to avoid social media coverage prejudicing the jury pool Prison held a Requiem Mass for Meagher, thousands of flowers, candlelight vigil, several public marches (to raise awareness for broader concerns about violence against women), memorials

Current Affairs 2: Gender Inequality in the Workplace Many countries worldwide, including Australia, have made significant progress towards gender equality in recent decades, particularly in areas such as education. However, women continue to earn less than men, are less likely to advance their careers as far as men (imbalanced representation at senior management and board level), and are more likely to spend their final years in poverty (superannuation gap). At the same time, some men find it more difficult to access family- friendly policies or flexible working arrangements than women.

Current Affairs 2: Gender Inequality in the Workplace The aim of gender equality in the workplace: achieve broadly equal outcomes for women and men, not exactly the same outcome for all individuals. This requires: -workplaces to provide equal remuneration for women and men for work of equal or comparable value -the removal of barriers to the full and equal participation of women in the workforce -full and genuine access to all occupations and industries, including to leadership roles for women and men -elimination of discrimination on the basis of gender particularly in relation to family and caring responsibilities for both women and men

Current Affairs 2: Gender Inequality in the Workplace Statistics that are good to know Women and men have an earning difference of $298.10 per week, national gender pay gap of 18.8% Women comprise 45% of all employees in Aus. Women constitute 70% of all part-time employees and 35% of full time employees. Women constitute around 15% of higher board positions in companies. 15% of ASX 200 companies do not have a woman on their board.

Current Affairs 2: Gender Inequality in the Workplace Now… why? Gender equality attracts top talent Gender equality can reduce expenses Companies with gender equality perform better Gender equality improves national productivity and competitiveness Gender inequality wastes resources

Current Affairs 3: Gender issues in society LGBT Rights - Same Sex Marriage In Ireland: final figures show 62 per cent of votes in favour of the change and 38 per cent against. Bill Shorten to introduce private members bill to legalise same-sex marriage on Monday Arguments for and against? Recent polls have put public support for gay marriage as high as 72 per cent. Look at the perspective of different lobby groups for and against the issue
