5 Group Story! Each group will be responsible for one element of the PLOT DIAGRAM. Table 4 Create antagonists (5) Table 5 Conflict #2 man vs. society man vs. supernatural man vs. technology Table 1 Create settings (5) Table 2 Create protagonists (5) Table 3 Create conflicts man vs. man man vs. self man vs. nature

6 Using your elements, create a story! Each group will select ONE element from the paper bags (Setting, Protagonist, Conflict #1, Antagonist, and Conflict #2)

8 The meaning of Imagery and Symbols pages 96 and 97 Learning Target: Identify imagery and symbols that writers use in a way to infer a writers purpose and interpret meaning Learning Target: Write an interpretive statement about the meaning in a text by analyzing and synthesizing information

9 Fire and Ice by Robert Frost Quick Write: Why are people so fascinated with how the world is going to end??? SHARE OUT!! In your notebook, tell me what LITERAL IMAGES come to mind when you see these two words: FIRE ICE Brainstorm a list of ideas, objects, and events associated with these two words.

10 Now, in your notebook, make meaning of the common figurative associations as presented with the following sentences: Her icy stare let me know just how she felt. He acted so cold to me that I knew he was still angry. His face was red and flushed with the heat of his anger. The fierce fire in her eyes made her attitude clear.

11 What do you think the poem “Fire and Ice” is going to be about? Think about the literal and figurative elements! With a partner, read the poem – each person should read it to the other person. Now, circle the words associated with the two major images. Class brainstorm of questions we have for the poem. Tomorrow…Socratic Seminar on the poem!!

12 The Gift of the Magi pages 98-105 Target: How SITUATIONAL IRONY contributes to the theme of the story. Do now: Open your book to page 98 and read the Before Reading portion. Highlight the definitions for TONE and IRONY. Also, find the meaning for the word ALLUSION and highlight it. As you read, circle words that you do not know. Figure out the meaning of the word using the context of the word. Highlight any ALLUSIONS you find in the story. Answer all the Key Ideas and Details questions, there are 7.

13 Complete the SIFT Strategy on page 104 with your group. The first column is are textual evidence (symbol, imagery, figurative language, and tone/theme). The second column: What effects or meaning or details. Homework: Complete the writing prompt on page 105!

14 Do now… Share your writing prompts. Pick the most creative one to share. 4 Corners! The teacher will read a statement, and you move to the corner that matches your opinion – Strongly Agree, Agree, Strongly Disagree, and Disagree. 1. Students -- move to the corner with the sign that most closely matches and reflects your opinions, without any discussion or verbal response. 2. After you have arrived at your corner, you have 3-5 minutes to discuss your reactions and opinions. 3. A spokesperson from each group will report your groups opinions. 4. Debate/discussion. 5. You may change your opinion now. 6. You may explain why you changed your opinion as a result of the debate.
