2 PROTAGONIST –the main character whom the conflict is centered around ANTAGONIST –the character, action, or thing that opposes the main character

3 CHARACTER MOTIVATION –the reasons why a character acts, thinks, or feels a certain way FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW –when a character in the story is the narrator, or the person telling the story

4 Static Character: one who does not change much in the course of a story Dynamic Character: one who changes as a result of the story’s events Flat Character: one who only has one or two traits (these can be described in a few words) Round Character: like a real person, one who has many different character traits

5 FLASHBACK –a stop in the chronological order of plot that flashes back on to an earlier time SYMBOL –ordinary object, event, person or animal that is used to represent an extraordinary meaning

6 FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE –vivid language used for description that is not intended to be taken literally HYPERBOLE –a HUGE exaggeration

7 PERSONIFICATION –giving human characteristics to non- human things SIMILE –comparison of two unlike things using the words “like,” “as,” or “than” METAPHOR –comparison of two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”
