To interact with UPLift! view as a Slide Showhere Using the Library This section of UPLift! is aimed at all students. It focuses on the core skills required to make effective use of the University of Portsmouths Library. For example, it will help you to locate books, journals and other resources for your subject, find out where to ask for help and have an item issued to you. Perhaps you know how to do some of these things already? Take the short quiz to find out. Perhaps you need to develop a particular skill? Take the link to find out more. If you would like some more help click on the Help! button, otherwise move to the next page using the arrow icon. Core Skills

4 Using the Library Core Skills When you visit the library, you can find help with the library layout on notice boards near the staircases. Of course you can always ask a member of library staff to help you locate things. Here is some general guidance : Books & DVDs – 000 – 329 can be found on the ground floor Books & DVDs – 330 – 820 SEC can be found on the first floor Books & DVDs - 820 SHA – 999 can be found on the second floor Journals and magazines can also be found on the second floor Locate the main areas of stock for your subject including books, DVDs and journals areas of books and DVDs for your subject

6 Using the Library Core Skills Regardless of which floor you find your library items, take them and your student card to the self-service machines on the Ground Floor. The service is available throughout Library opening hours. Have an item issued to you at the Issue and Returns desk

8 Using the Library Core Skills Books maybe issued or returned via the self service machines throughout Library opening hours. These are located on the Ground Floor just before the exit turnstiles. You will need your student card to issue books to yourself. Follow the on screen instructions. Dont forget to take your receipt to remind you when to return the book. 10 Using the Library Core Skills You are most likely to require the self service photocopying facilities. Black and white photocopiers are distributed across all floors of the library. A colour copier is situated in the silent zone on the second floor. 12 Using the Library Core Skills A4 scanners can be found on the Ground and First Floors of the Library, whilst A3 scanners are situated on the Second Floor. They are free to use. 16 Using the Library Core Skills In the Library: For enquiries related to borrowing including queries about your library account and fines, ask at the User Services Desk on the Ground Floor. Also ask here about Distance Learning Services.borrowing Distance Learning There are 3 Information Desks in the library and staff there will help you with enquiries relating to any subject or library resource. The Ground Floor Information Desk is open the longest, into the evenings and on weekends.
