Goals Value = Goals = Behavior = Self-esteem

Long vs. Short – Copy this slide! A short term goal is achieved quickly For example: finish term paper, wash dishes. They help you achieve your long term goals. Long term goals will take months, years, all your life. For example: graduate from college, become a pilot, lose ___ pounds, etc.

Other Goals – Copy this slide: Visionary goals – goals you might not expect to achieve but that are still worthwhile. Ex: Becoming an astronaut might not be obtainable but you could end up working for NASA.

More Goals – Copy this slide: Fixed Goals - Related to a specific date and time. Ex: Finishing your paper before Friday. Flexible Goals – Goals that can be achieved at any time. Ex : Saving up to $1000

Do you believe you can achieve? We need to learn how to dream. Keep the dream alive, reach your goals Some people don’t decide or have a vision of what they want out of life. NO GOALS!! People with goals can see what they eventually want to achieve and they can see just how to get there.

S pecific -The goal should identify a specific action that will take place. M easurable - The goal and its benefits can be measured. A chievable - The goal should be attainable given available resources. R ealistic - The goal should require you to stretch some, but allow the likelihood of success. T imely - The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished. SMART GOALS – Copy this

On the back of your notes Write a long list of the goals you think would be important and worthwhile for you to accomplish (a dream list) Now have them look at their list and ask themselves the following questions: Does it fit your values? Is it realistic? Is it flexible? Does it fit in with your other goals? Will the rewards be worth what you put in to it? Is it what you want?

Goal Handprint On a piece of construction paper, trace your hand. Each of your fingers represents a type of goal we discussed: Long term Short term Fixed Flexible Visionary Label each finger accordingly and write a goal you have. You should have 5 goals written – one to represent each TYPE of goal. (See Example)

Build a bridge and get over it It requires the same amount of energy to be successful as it does to be unsuccessful. You will have challenges You will have roadblocks You can have excuses or success but not both

An elephant with his trunk can easily pick up a one ton load. But have you ever visited a circus and watched these huge Creatures standing quietly while tied to a small wooden stake? While still young and weak, an elephant is tied by a heavy chain to an immovable iron stake. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot break the chain or move the stake. Then, no matter how large and strong the elephant becomes, he continues to believe he can not move as long as he can see the stake in the ground beside him. Many intelligent adult humans are like the circus elephant. They are restrained in thoughts, actions, and results. They never move out any further than the extent of their own self-imposed limitations. If this is happening to you and your life…. Resolve now to uproot the stakes that hold you …… break the chains of hindering habit. Becoming the man or woman you knew you can become and should become! You can have it all Story: “Circus Elephants and Limitations”

There are three types of people Ones that make things happen Those that let it happen And the ones that don’t know what happened. What one are you going to be?

Types of resources: Community resources: parks, schools, libraries and things shared by many. Natural resouces: taken from the land like agricultural products, fossil fuels, etc.

Using Resources: Copy this: Material Resources – Time, money, possessions, community resources. Human Resources – come from within people like skills, knowledge, talents, energy.
