2 All About You Unit: Your vocabulary will need to keep in your classroom folder that will stay in the room. This will help you during assessments review materials. Activities can be taken home once graded. You will need paper in your folder handy for our first project or a paper notebook.

3 Vocabulary List: A  Puberty: A time of growth and maturity for young adults.  Self Concept : A mental picture of yourself, how you see yourself inside and out.  Self Esteem: Believing in yourself and your abilities.  Adolescent: Period of great growth and change between childhood and adulthood.  Hygiene -Taking care of your body from head to toes. Homework: Journal: You will need a picture of yourself for class tomorrow. Think about a life motto.

4 Classwork: Creating your Journal Book  Picture yourself: Need the picture you brought from home.  Complete the front cover of your Magazine/ Journal Cover.  Answer each section question and complete your front cover of your journal.  What is your life motto? This may be words you live by; maybe a quote or saying?  Explain your answer on page one of your journal.

5 Application of Vocabulary  Peers: People the same age as you.  Peer mediator: Is the process by which peers help other students find a solution to a conflict.  Personality: A part of you that you reveal to others around you through the way you look, act, communicate and dress.

6 Part Two: What is good hygiene? Directions: 1. You will need to write two notes per body area. 2. These notes should be how you are currently taking care of your body, now that most of you are going through puberty.

7 What is Hygiene?  Definition: Taking care of your body from head to toes. Considered good grooming skills.  Good grooming starts before you get dressed in the morning.  Good grooming means taking care of your hair, skin, face, hands, feet and total body.  Good grooming can lift your self-concept, and self-esteem.

8 Taking care of your skin  Oil glands in your face cause oil to develop, which if not cleaned properly can turn into clogged pores and create pimples.  Glands also start to perspire or sweat.  Wear deodorant or anti-perspirant each day.  Bath each day.  How to take care of skin:  Get plenty of sleep.  Drink plenty of water  Bath and wash your face each day.  Protect skin from the sun.

9 Taking care of your hair.  Your hair can set you apart from everyone else. So make sure it looks its best!  Wash hair regularly with shampoo and maybe conditioner.  Don’t over product your hair.  Wash hair at least every other day. Washing includes gently scrubbing scalp, and rinsing properly.

10 Taking care of hands and feet.  Wash feet and hands regularly.  Warm water + soap+ lather = rinse and dry with paper towel.  Moisturize hand and feet to prevent dryness.  Trim nails on hands and feet regularly.  Do not wear wet socks or shoes, bacteria can grow and cause athletes' foot, stinky shoes and feet.

11 Taking care of teeth Teeth are needed for eating, chewing, and shaping your mouth and smile. Tips for healthy teeth Brush teeth with soft bristle tooth brush and tooth paste. Use gentle up an down movement to clean between teeth and gums. Floss each day. Get regular checkups.

12 Taking care of clothes  Clothing is a way to express yourself  Clothes need to be washed regularly.  Should change ALL clothing everyday.  Treat stains, fix holes and rips.  Choose appropriate clothing for each occasion.

13 Vocabulary Words Communication -sending and receiving a message verbally or non-verbally. Conflict: Any struggle, disagreement, or fight between two or more people. Stress: Body’s reaction to changes around it, such as unpleasant events or intense situations. Body Language : Gestures and body movements to convey a message. Goals: Setting a specific, measurable objective. Short Term Goal: objective for the near future Long Term Goal: objective for the distant future.

15 My Family Tree  We will begin filling out your family tree, tracing you back as ever far as you would like to go.  Need: paper, pencil, some previous knowledge needed.  On the back answer the following questions: (one paragraph each)  1. How is our family unique?  2. What have you inherited from you family?

17 Communication: A necessity in life Do You See What I See: verbal and nonverbal game Direction help : During game think about descriptive words that can be used to explain picture to the class. One person presents as verbal communicator, rest of class nonverbal communicators drawing what they are describing. Need: I sheet of paper, pencil with eraser. Tips to help: describe specifically what you see. Size: Large, Medium, Small Location: Left, Right, Top, Bottom, Corner, vertical, horizontally. Type of shape: Block, Stick, Square, Circle, Plus Sign

18 Suicide Prevention  Suicide: When someone takes their own life to escape emotional or physical pain they are feeling.  Bullicide: When someone takes their own life to escape their bully who is abusing them.

19 Part 3: Career vs. Job  In your life time you will have many jobs and a few careers.  Your jobs should give you and idea of they type of career you will be interested in.

21 www.driveofyourlife.org  Drive Of Your Life Program Drive Of Your Life Program  Program Explanation- 5 jobs of interest-10-15 minutes each job.  Driver’s Permit: Important do not loss! Write down user name and password.

22  Once you have driven the five job choices you will revisit the one job that stands out to you….your dream job.  Excluding Model and Pro Athlete.  Decide wisely, you will be spending some time on this one career so make sure you are interested in it.

23 Dream Career  Deciding on your dream career…..  You will be asked to decide on one career that stands out to you, that you enjoyed learning about most.  You will drive to that career one last time to answer the question on the last page of your Career Interest Survey Packet.  Please use complete sentences and fill out as much information as possible. You may use your own paper to do so.

24 Dream Career Dream Career presentation.  Once you have finished with your career summative sheet, Optional Extra Credit: Turn your summative answers into a one page paper. 5 points extra credit.  Then you may go to one of the following sites and play the educational games.  Math Playground Math Playground  Ology Ology  Powerschool

25 Small Society  Pretend you are moving out on your own with your friends for the very first time.  Going to have a roommate, pay bills, earn a pay check, have your first checking account with checks, make your first budget.  We will begin by you choosing a roommate or two.

26 Budget  A budget is a plan of how you are going to spend and save your money. Figure this by:  Your take home pay minus your bills. Everyone’s budget will differ.  Income: the amount of money you have coming in.  Your BUDGET:  How much will you make each week for you paycheck?  $7.50 per hour X 7 hours per day X 5 days per week.  How much will you make each month?  35 hours per week X 4 weeks per month
