Your next task is to now try and describe what has happened in the news that relates to the picture. Can you think of three words to describe the event or picture? Be prepared - you will be asked to explain why you have chosen those words. You have 2 minutes to think of your words.

Displaced Callous Persecution Jeopardy

Can you work out what the words mean from these sentences?
Each year thousands of displaced men, women and children attempt a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Often the migrants are abandoned at sea by their callous traffickers. The migrants often cannot go home due to the persecution they face there. These people are so desperate to begin a new life in Europe, they are willing to put their lives in jeopardy aboard unseaworthy, dangerous vessels. The c

Definitions… Displaced: moved (something) from its proper or usual position. Callous: showing or having an insensitive and cruel disregard for others. Persecution: hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs; oppression. Jeopardy: danger of loss, harm, or failure.

What is the event that is happening in the news?

Each year thousands of men, women and children attempt a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Many of them are trying to escape poverty and war in their home countries. But the journey is very dangerous and hundreds of people have died trying to reach Europe. Criminal gangs pack too many people into small boats, which leak and often sink. There's nobody to make sure the journey is safe. The unsafe boats mean people have lost their lives at sea. The United Nations says 13,500 migrants have been rescued trying to reach Europe so far this year. Around 35,000 migrants have arrived from Africa in On 18 April a boat carrying up to 900 people sank. Authorities say 28 people were rescued; but many more died. Many European counties have cut back their commitment to send search and rescue boats to help these people, as they say they can’t cope with the numbers seeking refuge. Britain has a Royal Navy ship stationed in the Mediterranean to help with rescue efforts. European leaders are meeting this week to try to work out what to do.

Apply knowledge The next slide you will see shows 4 images unrelated to the story previously discussed. Try to form a sentence using the new words for each of the images. Now try to form one sentence that uses all 4 words…

Displaced Callous Persecution Jeopardy

In the Sun Newspaper, columnist Katie Hopkins compared the migrants to ‘cockroaches’ and claimed Europe should be turning them away with ‘gunships’, rather than trying to rescue them. This was shortly after 900 men, women and children drowned in one incident. What do you think of her views? Should they have been published by the Sun?
