Xenia Christian School David Bryant, Guidance Counselor

What is College Credit Plus?  The State of Ohio’s dual enrollment program  It is an opportunity for students to earn both high school and college credit by taking college level coursework.  The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to college-ready students.  It allows students to earn college credit for potentially no cost while in grades 7 through 12, thus saving some money when the student enters college.

What college or university can I attend?  You can take CCP courses through any public college or university, as well as any private college or university that chooses to participate.  Students must meet the enrollment criteria of the college or university that they choose to attend.  This may include required placement testing.  Consideration should be given to the worldview of the college or university and how it aligns with that of the family.

How is CCP funded for students of chartered non-public or home schools?  Major Change this year  The state general assembly will allocate a set amount of funds for this program each year.  The state will award allocation units that are good for up to a four semester hour class.  Every eligible applicant will be awarded one allocation unit beginning with seniors and going down to seventh grade.  If funds remain, students will be awarded additional allocation units beginning with the seniors.

What if I apply and don’t get funding, or enough funding?  You can choose not to participate.  Self pay.  Cedarville -- $166/credit hour  Sinclair -- $41.50/credit hour  Clark State -- $41.50/credit hour

Are there some potential costs?  Students / parents are responsible for all transportation and parking costs.  Books for classes that are covered under CCP funding will be paid for by Xenia Christian via auxiliary state funding  Books for classes that are self funded are the responsibility of the student / parents.  Failing a CCP course can result in having to pay for the course

What classes can I take?  No religious class can be taken through the CCP program, so students must take their Bible classes at XC, or self paid at a Christian university.  Students must also take Current Social Problems at XC.  Other than that, students can choose any course that applies toward a degree or workforce certification.  Colleges have produced various suggested “pathways” that students can use and provide advisors to help students to select courses that can benefit them.  Summer work is now funded by CCP.

Will my credits earned transfer to any college or university?  Many entry-level courses earned at an Ohio public college are guaranteed to transfer to any other Ohio public college.  Credits earned at private colleges, or those that you want to transfer to an out-of-state institution, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the institution you are seeking to attend.

Where can I take CCP courses?  Classes can be taken at the college or university.  Many courses are offered in an online format.  Xenia Christian will give students additional “study hall” periods and computer access to help facilitate the taking of online college courses.  Plan to deliver Calculus to our students, instructed in our classroom by our instructor for college credit.

CCP courses can be taken if…  You want to take college courses to satisfy your high school graduation requirements.  You completed your high school graduation required classes and you want to begin college work.  You want to explore college and take a course in a subject that interests you.

What credit do I get?  Courses count for both high school and college credit and will appear on both your high school and college transcripts.  Three semester hours of college credit equals one high school credit.  Courses taken through CCP will count in your high school GPA and class rank.  All CCP courses are given the same.5 GPA bump that our honors classes are given.

What are the benefits of CCP?  Free / low cost college credit.  Access to courses in areas that interest me that are not available at my high school.  Dual credit

What are the concerns and cautions about participation in CCP?  Is my student college ready?  You are beginning a college record that will follow you throughout your college career.  This can affect future college enrollment and financial aid decisions.  Failing a CCP course can result in having to pay for the course and not receiving a high school credit requirement for graduation.  Does your student have the maturity to interact with college-aged students / adults

What are the concerns and cautions about participation in CCP?  What do I lose?  The high school experience… connectedness with friends & teachers… senior trip…  Extracurricular participation?  “Childhood”… growing up too fast  Parent access to information / interaction with professors  Who is my student in class with?  Even in an online class, there is interaction with other students.

What are the concerns and cautions about participation in CCP?  What is my student learning?  Is the course content age appropriate?  Does the course contradict your family’s worldview?  Loss of Biblical integration / Christian teacher that would be present in the XC course.

What do I do if I want to participate?  Intent to Participate form due to ODE by April 1 st  Email them directly to: CCPIntentLetter@education.ohio.gov  Please carbon copy to dbryant@xeniachristian.com  Apply to the college or university of your choice.  You must be accepted prior to applying to the state for funding  Deadline is April 8 th, 2016  If ACT score is required for course placement, deadline for the April 9, 2016 test is Friday, March 4, 2016

What do I do if I want to participate?  Establish a SAFE account at: https://safe.ode.state.oh.us/portal  Within this SAFE account, you will submit your college acceptance letter(s) and fill out an application for funding  Complete your CCP funding application  The deadline is April 8, 2016  You will receive your funding award notification within your College Credit Plus Funding Application located in your SAFE Account before May 15.

We Home School, but take classes at XC Should we apply Non-Public or Home School?  Only apply as Non-Public if you are a “diploma track” student that has taken all accredited coursework and will be receiving a Xenia Christian diploma.  You probably have not notified your school district that you are a home school student  All others should apply as Home School. You should have notified your local school superintendent, and should have received a 2015-2016 Superintendent Letter Excusing your Student from Compulsory Attendance
