This is a modified true/false formative assessment. If the statement is true, simply mark a “T”. If the statement is false, mark an “F”, and correct the underlined portion of the sentence. Example: Energy is defined as the ability to use fuel to create electricity. ANS: F; do work

1.Solar energy is related and can be linked to most other energy sources on Earth, as the “original” source. It can be linked to geothermal energy, as the Earth’s surface is heated unevenly, creating pressure gradients that allow air to flow. 2.It is possible to increase the efficiency of our energy by relying on hybrid energy plants, which rely on both fossil fuels, and renewable or inexhaustible sources. 3.The efficacy of a CFL bulb which uses 9 Watts of energy to produce 550 lumens is 59 lm/W.

4. Because of the 1 st law of thermodynamics, we know that most incandescent light bulbs are extremely inefficient because so much of their energy is lost as heat. 5. When the Sun’s energy is transformed into the carbohydrates glucose and starch inside plants through the process of photosynthesis, the 1 st law of thermodynamics is perfectly illustrated. 6. In this image of Lake Mead, we see chemical potential energy getting ready to do work. 7. Practically all electricity generated in the world today relies on the technological breakthrough of the photovoltaic cell.

8. Unlike man-made energy systems, plants are much more efficient at energy conversions, using nearly 100% of the Sun’s energy. 9. Coal-fired power plants are slightly more efficient at producing electricity than nuclear power plants, even though ultimately, nuclear power plants are cleaner burning. 10. Using ethanol, a plant product, could be the perfect answer to increasing fuel efficiency, however it both decreases emissions, and increases fuel economy.

Describe the difference between active, and passive solar design.
