Accessing the Novel & Film CHAPTER 1 & FILM

LT & AGENDA LTs: As a litterateur, I can utilize non- print text to support my comprehension of characters, plot, and Hurston’s writing style in order to explain these important points from Chapter 1. Agenda: – LT/Energizer/HW – Film – Discussion Processing Discussion Share Out Exit Slip – Reading Time

LEARNING TARGET & SUCCESS CRITERIA Today’s LT: I can utilize non-print text to support my comprehension of characters, plot, and Hurston’s writing style in order to explain these important points from Chapter 1 What does it look like/sound like/be like when a student has met the learning target? – Students can identify and describe Janie, Phoebe, Nanny, Logan, Jody, and Tea Cake. – Students can describe the early parts of Janie’s life. – Student can identify and explain frame story, point of view and characterization as a part of Hurston’s writing style.

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM I expect you to be ready to start class when the bell rings. To that end, please complete the following: – Take our your energizer notebook, a writing utensil, and your T2Ted copy of TEWWG. – Please put away any electronic devices.

IN YOUR ENERGIZER NOTEBOOK… Please record today’s learning target: As a litterateur, I can utilize non-print text to support my comprehension of characters, plot, and Hurston’s writing style in order to explain these important points from Chapter 1. Please write down tonight’s reading homework: – T2T Chapter 2 And answer the following energizer questions: 1) What questions do you have about the beginning of the novel? Write down at least 2.

FILM NOTES Take notes on: – Characters (6-7) – Main events (3-5) Jot these down below your learning target and energizer; leave a little bit of space between each category so you can add to that when we discuss them as a group.

DISCUSSION PREP Underneath your movie notes, write down your thoughts and responses in answer to your assigned question. In order to be ready to present your thinking to your small discussion group.

DISCUSSION Each pair responsible will have 2 minutes to present their thinking about their assigned question.  The first speaker will read the question.  I’ll worry about timing. If the speaker is finished before their minute is up, it is the job of the rest of the group to ask them questions to clarify what they heard and gain more insight about the topic.  As a large group, we’ll go around and hear what the other group members learned (ie, if you’re a listener, I’m going to double check that you are – in fact – listening)

CHECK-IN ABOUT TODAY & READING TIME On your half-sheet, please make some lists: – 3 things (total) you learned about today’s topics – the ones taught to you – that you didn’t know before Example: I presented on the Porch Sitters, I’m going to list 3 things I learned about the opening, characterization and perspective. – 2 connections I can make between the story and the values we identified last class that we predicted Hurston might suggest in Their Eyes. – 1 thing you have a question about. Once you are done, flip your paper over and start reading and T2Ting
