Brushing your teeth Now with your group members on a single sheet of paper come up with the directions for brushing teeth. You must all agree on the directions.

Now, I’m going to take a few volunteer groups to tell me how to brush my teeth. Read your directions aloud and clearly. Be sure to read them slowly so I can follow your directions word for word while I complete this task. DO NOT add any additional directions to what you have written down.

Agenda Do Now/Homework Helms Rules What is Science Scientific Method Reading

Today’s Objective To understand the steps of the scientific method.

Science is…. 1. Studies the natural world. 2. Discovers nature's "rules" about how things work. 3. Discovers knowledge. What do you mean we’re not science? Haven’t you seen our movies??? Science excludes the supernatural- events or things that cannot be explained by nature.

Science is….. Practical Based on observation An intellectual pursuit Systematic Sounds difficult, right? It isn’t! Science isn't mysterious or unattainable. The scientific method is really no different than science itself.

Types of science in school.. Life Science – deals with living things Earth Science – Earth and space Physical Science – deals with matter and energy Scientific study may overlap one or more categories! Life Science – deals with living things Earth Science – Earth and space Physical Science – deals with matter and energy Scientific study may overlap one or more categories!

Science explains nature….. Scientific explanations help you understand what is going on in the natural world. Sometimes explanations must be modified if new technology or new information is discovered

Scientists learn new information by performing investigations. Example: How do you know if you have allergies? Observations Experiments Modeling

What is the Scientific Method? The Scientific Method is an organized set of investigational procedures

Identify the problem. Ask the question that you want solved. Develop a hypothesis. Predict an answer to your question – make an “if… then…” statement Create an experiment. Make a reliable experiment with detailed steps that can be replicated. Perform experiment. Follows steps exactly, record numerical data in tables. Analyze your data. What does the information from your experiment tell you? Be sure to graph your data. Draw a conclusion. What does the data tell about your hypothesis. Communicate results. Tell the world about your results so that they may build upon your findings.

Now that we have the passage read. Lets answer the first question together. What we don’t finish in class today becomes homework and will be due Thursday the 10th.
