1 U.S. History 8 Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014 1 LO: Students will be able to define the American Civil War and sort basic vocabulary into categories based on association with the North or South. APK: People in countries, too, often disagree with others inside of their own country (like within a family). When these disagreements become violent, they can result in a civil war 1. Connect APK to LO: Students, you already know that the Northern and Southern states in America had major differences in 1860. Now, we will see how these differences resulted in violence during the American Civil War. 1 civil war: a war fought between the people of a single country (against each other). Pair/Share: How are disagreements among family members often worse than disagreements between strangers?

2 U.S. History 8 Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014 2 Concept Development: The American Civil War was a war fought between the Southern states of the United States and the Northern States of the United States from 1861-1865. NORTHSOUTH AKA (Also Known as) Reasons for Fighting Flags/Colors/ Uniforms Leaders Military Generals Slavery Who Won? The Union The Confederacy (also Confederates) To keep the United States together as one Union (one country). To split away, secede, from the U.S. and make their own country where they can keep slaves. U.S. Flag Uniforms navy blue Rebel Flag Uniforms gray President Abraham Lincoln (elected 1860) Jefferson Davis was president of the Confederacy General Ulysses S. Grant General Robert E. Lee Against slaveryFor slavery The North. The country was kept whole and slavery outlawed. But this was at a huge total cost of 618,000 American deaths from both sides. Pair-Share: Name some Union States. Name some Confederate States. Pair/Share: Why would the South call their flag the “Rebel” flag? Draw a simple picture of each flag on your worksheet. Pair-Share: What results would be different if the South had won? GRANT LEE Pair-Share: The men in this picture are in the same room and aren’t killing each other. When do you suppose this picture was taken? Why? LINCOLNDAVIS Pair-Share: Which of these two men wanted to keep the country whole? How do you know? Circle the definition of secede in this box.
