3 Australia - Basic Facts world´s largest islandsmallest continent The world´s largest island, the smallest continent hemisphere Located south of Asia, between Indian and Pacific oceans, southern hemisphere (= a half of the earth) There are only about 20 millions inhabitants constellation of The flag – the Union Jack with five stars represent the constellation of the Southern Cross and a large seven- pointed star for 6 states and 1 territory The official language is English The capital is Canberra Terra Australis Incognita - an "unknown land of the South„ People call themselves „Aussies“

4 Australia - History Aborigines The continent was settled about 50,000 years ago by Aborigines Dutch The first Europeans to discover Australia were the Dutch in the 17th century (western and northern coast) James Cook penal colony established 26 January Australia's national day 1770 - James Cook sailed along and mapped the east coast, which he named New South Wales and claimed for Great Britain. Soon, a new penal colony (= a special area of land where prisoners are kept) was established in Port Jackson (Sydney). The flag was raised on 26 January 1788 – this date became Australia's national day

6 Australia – Nature Great Dividing range Australian Alps The land is mostly flat except for Great Dividing range in the east and the Australian Alps in the south. The highest peak is Mt. Kosciuszko (2,228 m) Uluru/ Ayers Rock The most famous landform is Uluru/ Ayers Rock in the centre of the country creeks The major rivers are Murray and Darling, there are numerous creeks (= a stream or river that often dries up) Tropical regions in the north with heavy rains – rainforests. Hot and dry arid centre with deserts. Subtropical and mild climate in the south Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is the world´s largest coral reef, along the Queensland coast - extends for over 2,000 km

8 Australia – Nature There are unique animals and plants because of the climate and geographical isolation Marsupials (= animals that carry their babies in a pocket of skin on their bodies) as kangaroos, koala bears Platypus ( egg-laying mammal), echidna, Tasmanian devil, wombat, dingo Eucalyptus and grass is typical vegetation

12 Australia – Aboriginals Indigenous Australians = Aboriginals Indigenous Australians = Aboriginals are the original inhabitants of the Australian continent and nearby islands, aprox. 3% of the population. Numerous tribes and languages Arrived to the continent about 50,000 years ago over the island bridge from Africa and Asia, thousands of them died after the British settled in Hunter- gatherers using special tools as boomerangs etc. Aboriginal culture – music (didgeridoo), paintings (in caves, dotted painting), Dreaming (= meeting their God, the highest state of mind)

Sydney Harbour Bridge can be climbed by visitors.
