Using the iPad in the classroom has its strengths and weaknesses. I would like to name some of them at this time. While opinions may vary, these are some of the ones I came up with after using the device.

One Device, One Operating System The iPad is the only device of its kind and uses the same operating system on all of its devices. This means when the instructor chooses an app, it will work on the other devices.

Pros Lets face it, traditional textbooks are very expensive. On top of that, all of the material you want to cover may not be in the book. The solution is E-books. E-books is more cost effective than traditional books. Plus, instructors can make their own books.

Pros One of my favorite modifications in a game called Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is an item based off of Dungeons & Dragons called the “Bag of Holding.” I could put all of my items from my inventory into this bag, but the items I put in this bag would not count toward my item weight capacity. The iPad also works in this way. Instead of hauling books, manuals, study guides, presentations, calculators, notebooks for writing, and documents passed out from lectures, all can be store in electronic format on the iPad. Plus, with cloud storage such as iCloud or the better version BOX, I could have access to those items from any computer or device. I can store documents from my iPad and open them on my G-Tablet. Plus, my back thanks me for not having to carry all of those items.

Expensive Unfortunately the iPad is quite expensive. The price for an iPad 3 cost $499 and the price of an iPad mini is $329. For instructors ordering for a class such as freshman, grants will be needed to compensate. Most of the time if grants are used, it may take a year or more before they go into effect. Apple inc. may be willing to give volume discounts or offer incentives for large orders like most companies.

C ons The iPad can work offline, but in-order to get applications the official way, you will need wireless internet. If you are home and you have a router or wireless switch, that is fine. The iPad connects like any other device. It you are not near a place with wireless internet, you will have to use the iPad model with 3G/4G capabilities. These models cost $100 dollars more and require a data plan with either AT&T or Verizon. Unfortunately, those are the only chooses you have for data plan. The third option is to get the Wi-Fi only version and use tethering thought your current data plan with your cell phone.

The iPad can’t open the storage it uses like a flash drive which Android devices can. Instead, you will have to have iTunes or a third-party program such as WiFilet in order to transfer files to and from your iPad. Reliance on i-Tunes
