7 Curriculum and Instruction Language Arts (reading/writing) Reading: (some examples include: decoding words, consonants, vowels (long vowels, paired vowel) goal-60 words per min end of the year,...) * Reading as detectives *Reading different genres including nonfiction Writing: basic paragraphs- five sentences, legible handwriting, writing is on topic... * Writing as reporters Reading Comprehension is Mark Keppel’s school wide goal. * Arts: used to make connection with language arts, social studies, and science

8  Curriculum and Instruction continued... * Mathematics: (some examples include: counting up to one hundred, count money up to $2.00 using different coins, telling time half past...) * Science: (Some examples: plants, animals habitats, weather seasons, states of matter,...) * Social Studies (some examples: geography, continents, basic US history, Economic: Wants /needs)

9  Report Cards have been modified to fit the specific needs of Common Core requirements  1 math grade  Academic scale: 4, 3, 2, 1 4: Thorough understanding and application of standards 3: Proficient understanding and application of standards 2: Partial understanding and application of standards 1: Minimal understanding and application of standards Report Card Changes

10 Tests Math and spelling tests will be given every Friday Sight words test will be given at the end of each month Graded work will be sent home in the study folders. Please return the next day Report Cards Will be sent home at the end of each trimester (look for my notes to set up an appointment) Please sign the envelope and return it in your child’s folder You may keep the report card Grading

11 In order to support the demands of the Common Core State Standards our school has decided to modify its homework policy. It is very important that we are all positive and enthusiastic about the new policy. 21st Century Homework

12 Study Guides Students will have weekly spelling words and sight words Students will take a spelling test every Friday and a sight words test at the end of every month. Online Educational Games(listed on Weebly) Flash Cards * Word Ring (high frequency words) Reading minimum of 2o minutes daily For extra practice, your child’s reading book will be sent home. 13 Thursday folder will be sent home every Thursday Please read through the material and record your initials inside the folder in the space provided Please remove all items and return the empty folder on Fridays. Thursday Folders

14 Uniforms are mandatory Navy blue, light blue, khaki, and white  Mark Keppel shirts and hats are available for purchase in the office  If you wish for your child to be exempt from wearing school uniform, you must make an appointment to meet with our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kelly Worley. Uniforms

15 *Praise good behavior *Rewards from prize box will be provided to reinforce positive behavior * Marble jar * Prizes for the prize box are accepted and much appreciated *Poor behavior will result in taking away privileges (examples include: 5 min of recess, behavioral journal) Discipline Slips: poor behavior during recess time will result in discipline slips Please sign the note and return it the next day Classroom Management

16 Absences/Tardiness If your child is absent, you must call/send a note explaining the reason for his/her absence Both absences & tardiness are recorded in your child’s report card Please, please be on time! Attendance

17 Parent Volunteers If you wish to volunteer, a current TB test is required. Please turn in TB test results at the school office. If interested, please sign up on our class website!!! *Please complete Student- Parent- Teacher Compact tonight Additional Information

18 Please write your child’s name on all personal items (ex: coats, backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc.) When sending money to school, please place it in an envelope with a note explaining its use Labeling
