3 Before the Interview Know your topic Formulate (good) interview questions Open-ended Clear Unbiased Logically sequenced Gather necessary equipment Choose an appropriate location

4 During the interview Make the interviewee comfortable Describe the interview process Explain the topic, purpose and types of questions you will ask Start with simple questions Aim for conversation, not interrogation Use eye contact and open body language Allow the person enough time to respond.

5 Probing questions Listen carefully, and use probing questions to obtain more depth: ”Could you give me an example of...” ”That sounds interesting, could you tell me more?” ”How did you feel about that/when...?” ”What do you mean by...?”

7 Effective Listening Habits Paying attention Listening for the whole message Hearing before evaluating Paraphrasing what was heard

8 After the Interview Listen to/watch/transcribe as soon as possible Analyse your interview: Record the central themes of the person's responses Record key quotes Edit the interview to make it suitable for your intended audience

9 Triad Activity In your group you will complete 2 practice interviews (1 minute) 1 with a good listener 1 with a bad listener 1 extended interview (5 minutes) Change roles each time Topic: ”life as a teenager” OR ”my experience of UHS” You should try to record the extended interview – if time we will watch a couple of them
