3 Democracy A form of government in which power comes from the people who are all equal under the law. Power is used either directly by the people of elected representatives.

5 1. Direct Democracy Definition How is power gained?
A form of government where each person directly votes on ALL decisions. All people must follow the laws How is power gained? Just by being a citizen! Everyone is equal! All citizens help to make all of the laws Requires almost constant voting Examples Ancient Greece

6 2. Presidential Democracy
Definition A form of government where people elect: Legislative representatives (Congress)to make laws An executive representative (President) to enforce the laws. All people must follow the laws How is power gained? Representatives are voted into office by the people Regular elections = new opportunities for new representatives Power is used to provide safety, services, and laws for the people. Examples The United States since 1776

8 3. Parliamentary Democracy
The People Definition A form of government where people elect legislative representatives (Parliament) to make laws Those Parliament members elect an executive representative (Prime Minister) to enforce the laws. All people must follow the laws and a constitution. How is power gained? Representatives are voted into office by the people Power is used to provide safety, services, and laws for the people. Examples Japan Legislative (Parliament) Executive (Prime Minister)

9 4. Constitutional Monarchy
Definition A form of government where power is shared between a monarch and elected legislative representatives. How is power gained? Monarchs still pass power through family lines Law-making representatives are voted on by the people All laws are written in a constitution that everyone must follow Citizen involvement = power to vote for legislative representatives Examples France after 1789 under Louis XVI United Kingdom under Queen Elizabeth
