4 What is Communication? Communication is the transmission of an idea or feeling so that the sender and receiver share the same understanding. Communication is not a mysterious process. It takes place when the ideas from your mind are transferred to another’s and arrive intact, complete, and coherent.

6 6 -It is planned communication to fulfill specific goals. -It is recognized as official communication. -Official conferences, meetings, and written reports are used for communication. Formal communication

7 7 -It is unplanned communication. -It follows the pattern of personal relationships among organization members. -It is usually used between friends. -It doesn’t have any rigid rules and guidelines. Informal communication

8 2-Types of Types of communication based on the communication channels used are –  Verbal Communication  Nonverbal Communication 8

9 Verbal  It refers to the form of communication in which message is transmitted verbally.  Communication is done by word of mouth and a piece of writing. KISS”  In verbal communication remember the abbreviation “KISS” (keep it short and simple). Verbal Communication is divided into:  Oral Communication  Written Communication 9

10 Oral  In oral communication, Spoken words are used.  It includes face-to-face conversations, speech, telephonic conversation, video, radio, television, voice over internet.  Communication is influence by speed and clarity of speaking. 10

11 Advantages –Disadvantages Verbal (oral) Communication Advantages – 1-It brings quick feedback. 2-In a face-to-face conversation, by reading facial expression and body language one can guess whether he/she should Disadvantages – 1-In face-to-face discussion, user is unable to deeply think about what he is delivering, so this can be counted as a fault.

12 Written  In written communication, written signs or symbols are used to communicate.  In written communication message can be transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc.  Written Communication is most common form of communication being used in business.

13 Advantages –Disadvantages Verbal (Written)Communication  Advantages 1-Messages can be edited and revised 2-Written communication provide record and backup. 3-A written message enables receiver to fully understand it and send appropriate feedback.  Disadvantages 1-Written communication doesn’t bring instant feedback. 2-It take more time in composing a written message as compared to word-of-mouth and number of people struggles for writing ability.

14 Nonverbal Nonverbal communication is the sending or receiving of wordless messages. Such as gesture, body language, posture, tone of voice or facial expressions, is called nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is all about the body language of speaker. 14

15 The Communication Equation What you hear Tone of voice Vocal clarity Verbal expressiveness 40% of the message What you see or feel Facial expression Dress and grooming Posture Eye contact Touch Gesture 50% of the message WORDS … 10% of the message!
