 In 1819 the Union has 11 free states and 11 slave states  Missouri wants to become a state but that would upset the balance – they want to be slave  Maine stepped up and said they wanted to be a state and they wanted to be a free state  Maine will enter as a free state and Missouri entered as a slave state  Seems like a simple solution right????

 The Compromise temporarily settled the issue but  A new problem occurred › Pro slavery members of Missouri’s constitutional convention added a clause to the proposed constitution that would prohibit free African Americans from entering the state › Many leaders saw the Missouri Compromise as a temporary solution to a growing problem › What did George Washington warn us about???

 1824 › 4 Candidates ran for office and all belonged to the Republican Party › “Favorite sons” – men who enjoyed the support of leaders from their own state and region › Henry Clay – Kentucky › Andrew Jackson – Tennessee › John Quincy Adams – Massachusetts › William Crawford - Georgia

 Henry Clay › American System – favored national bank, protective tariff, nationwide internal improvements  Adams also favored internal improvements but no tariffs  Jackson avoided taking a stand on specific issues

 Election Day › Jackson received the most popular votes but no candidate won the Electoral College › House of Representatives had to pick a candidate among the top three › Clay – Speaker of the House threw his support behind Adams › Adams 13 votes › Jackson 7 votes › Crawford 4 votes

 Jackson’s supporters accused Clay of arranging votes for Adams in return for a cabinet position  When Adams took office he named Clay as Secretary of State  This is known as the Corrupt Bargain  The incident split the party – Jackson’s supporters referred to themselves as Democrats  Henry Clay and his supporters formed a new party called the National Republicans

 John Quincy Adams Takes Office › Urged for standard internal improvements, federal revenue be used to build a national university › Congress granted the president funds for improving rivers and harbors, extending the National Road

 The Election of 1828 › John Quincy Adams vs. Andrew Jackson › Both Candidates used mudslinging tactics › Jackson ended up with 56% of the popular vote and 178 of the 261 Electoral votes › Jackson was given the nickname Old Hickory – a tough hard wood found on the frontier finally had reached the White House
