Election of 1824 From 1816-1824, there was only 1 political party: Republicans Begin to divide during Monroe’s term Election of 1824 had 4 candidates: William H. Crawford – old & ill Henry Clay – Speaker of House, Am. System John Quincy Adams – son of Pres. Andrew Jackson – War hero, “man of People”

The House to the Rescue In election, Jackson received most popular votes, but did not win a majority No one received a majority of electoral votes; had to let House of Reps decide

A “Corrupt Bargain” Clay made deal with JQA to make JQA next pres and Clay the secretary state Adams wins and Clay is secretary of state Jackson is MAD!!!

Adam’s Presidency Shadow cast because of corrupt bargain His ideas went against popular opinion Wanted a stronger navy, scientific expeditions, and direct gov’t involvement in economic growth Congress turned down many of his proposals; wanted a more limited role for gov’t

Election of 1828 AJ vs. JQA Splits the party Jackson begins mudslinging (attempting to ruin your opponent’s reputation with insults) Adams fights back Introduction of public rallies, campaign signs, barbeques, etc… AJ wins in landslide

Andrew Jackson as President Was an American success story AJ was what most people wanted in pres: Self made man War hero Thousands of farmers, laborers came to hear his Inaugural Address After speech, all the people went to White House Spilled food on furniture, trampling carpet with mud

Old Hickory and Democracy AJ nicknamed “Old Hickory” by his troops because he was tough He wanted common man involved in politics Promised “equal protection & equal benefits” for all Suffrage, or the right to vote, continued to expand for white males First national party convention was held in Baltimore in 1832 Nominated Jackson

The Spoils System Replaced gov’t employees with supporters Fired workers were upset and protested Jackson felt that a new group of employees would be good for democracy
