SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE Operated for NASA by AURA TIPS Cosmic Origins Spectrograph 20 September 2001

TIPS: COS Status - Keyes - 20 September 2001 Slide 2 of 10 Agenda  Overview  Instrument Activities and Status  STScI Ground System Activities – “Back-end” (Pipeline, Archive) – “Front-end” (Scheduling System)

TIPS: COS Status - Keyes - 20 September 2001 Slide 3 of 10 COS Overview   Ken Sembach: new COS Instrument Scientist in NISD   FUV flight detector now at Ball – – flight spare detector (FUV02) undergoing tests at UCB   SI Environmental (Thermal-Vac): fall 2002   Launch: January 2004 – – SM4 – – replace COSTAR

TIPS: COS Status - Keyes - 20 September 2001 Slide 4 of 10 COS Instrument Activities  Flight detectors for both channels meet or exceed performance requirements (QE, resolution, flatfields)  All FUV gratings (G130M, G160M, G140L) are flight-acceptable  Combined throughput for all FUV modes well above spec  FUV backup door mechanism re-work in fabrication; test in Oct  Initial FUV detector alignment activities; RASCAL in early Oct  NUV gratings for G185M, G225M, and G285M are below spec in absolute efficiency (worst-cases vary from 44-76% of spec)  NUV G230L awaiting testing – different design than M modes  TA1 mirror delivered and within spec  FSW enabling MEB functional tests and detector electronics (science exposures) to be installed on ops bench ~Oct 10

TIPS: COS Status - Keyes - 20 September 2001 Slide 6 of 10 COS Instrument Activities  NUV Gratings Status – G185M: candidate fix in-hand; will be tested in October > If works; proceed to fabricate new replica grating > If unsuccessful; use present G225M in G185 spectral region Resolution reduced to ~16,000 (from 20,000)Resolution reduced to ~16,000 (from 20,000) Increased spectral rangeIncreased spectral range – G225M: > if G185M procedure works; apply to G225M process, as well > If unsuccessful; contract has been let for mechanically-ruled G225M grating from Hitachi (delivery: summer 2002) higher scatterhigher scatter – G285M: accept gratings if test results meet present expectation

TIPS: COS Status - Keyes - 20 September 2001 Slide 7 of 10 COS Pipeline Systems  Pipeline CDRs held at STScI – OPUS/HDA and calcos : 23 and 24 July 2001, respectively – Review panel: STScI and IDT representation Ray Kutina (STScI) – Chair Ray Kutina (STScI) – Chair Tom Brown (STScI) Tom Brown (STScI) Ken Brownsberger (CU/IDT) Ken Brownsberger (CU/IDT) Paul Goudfrooij (STScI) Paul Goudfrooij (STScI) Richard Shaw (NOAO) Richard Shaw (NOAO) – 12 Requests for Action – no significant modifications – All presentations and RFAs online at
