SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE Operated for NASA by AURA COS Monthly Status Review 17 September 2002

Sembach - 17 September 2002 Slide 2 of 6 STScI Integrated Scheduling System   Phase 5 development completed – – Code testing completed – – Delivery of auto-wavecal SMSs/instructions/etc. to Ball this week – – All science / calibration exposure development is now complete   Phase 6 development in progress – – Bright object protection target screening document drafted, circulated > > Instrument Science Report to be filed later this week – – Initial preparations for SMOV begun > > Discussions initiated with IDT > > Meeting at GSFC next week (Erik W. will likely attend)

Sembach - 17 September 2002 Slide 3 of 6 COS Phase Development Plan (Rev 6, 10/26/01) Phase 1 (1/1/00 – 6/30/00) vMacro Development vReconfigurations Phase 2 (7/1/00 – 12/31/00) vNUV Timetag Mode + Darks vFUV Timetag Mode + Darks Phase 3 (1/1/01 – 6/30/01) vFUV & NUV Accumulation Science Exposures vFUV & NUV Target Acquisition Exposures vFUV & NUV Target Peakup Exposures Phase 4 (7/1/01 – 12/31/01) vAperture Alignment Exposures vOSM1 Focus Alignment Exposures vOSM1 Rotation Alignment Exposures vOSM2 Rotation Alignment Exposures vFUV & NUV FP Split Exposures Phase 5 (1/1/02 – 6/30/02) vFUV & NUV GO Wavelength Calibration Exposures vFUV & NUV Flat Field Lamp Calibration Exposures vFUV & NUV Automatic Wavelength Calibration Exposures vSAA Contours Phase 6 (7/1/02 – 12/31/02) vSMGT Preparations vSMOV Special Commanding vFUV & NUV Anomalous Recovery vFUV & NUV Initial Turn-on vFUV & NUV BOP Target Screening Phase 7 (1/1/03 – 6/30/03) vFUV & NUV Lifetime Adjustments vCoordinated Parallels

Sembach - 17 September 2002 Slide 4 of 6 STScI User Support  COS mini-handbook – – Provides observers with basic information about instrument capabilities available in Cycle 13 – – Finalized with revised FUV detector QE estimates (October distribution)  COS exposure time calculator – – Spectroscopic ETC requirements revisited (Astronomer Proposal Tools environment) – – Modules in common with STIS to be ready by Cycle 12 Call for Proposals – – COS implementation to occur over next 6 months

Sembach - 17 September 2002 Slide 5 of 6 Target Acquisition  OPUS support of T-Vac – – MOU requires STScI to deliver T-Vac version of OPUS two months in advance of T-Vac > > Need to have test (simulator) target acquisition images 2-4 weeks in advance of this date if OPUS delivery is to include target acquisition functionality –  – Feb. 1 T-Vac  Need TA data by Nov. 1-15 > > If not available, then STScI will deliver OPUS as usual Dec. 1 with existing functionality, and require delta-OPUS delivery as soon as possible after receipt of target acquisition data – – Delayed target acquisition data > > If tested in T-Vac, still want to archive target acquisition data at STScI > > Delay may cause conflicts with OPUS schedule/resources in Spring 2003

Sembach - 17 September 2002 Slide 6 of 6 COS Personnel Update  Personnel – Scott Friedman > New Instrument Scientist > Formerly Hopkins Project Scientist for FUSE
