Glossary  Denomination- Organised subgroup of the Christian Church  Multiculturalism- Policy that recognises cultural diversity within an overall structure  Meditation- Practice of emptying the mind to think or reflect on an aspect of God or Religious belief  Reincarnation- Concept of rebirth in the physical form  New Age Movement- Promotes and develops individual spirituality rather than institutionalised religion- yoga, practitioners, astrologers.

Orthodox Church  Small growth over last 50 years, appx 2.8 % of population  European and Middle Eastern Countries

Immigration  Direct Impact to Religious Spectrum in Australia  Up until Predominantly Christian Migrants  Immigration Restriction Act White Australia Policy  Post WW2- Migrants brought European variants of Christianity  Post Vietnam War- Influx of Asian Refuees (Buddhist and Catholics).  Introduction of Multiculturalism post Vietnam War  Muslims- Early Turkish Migrants worked in Rural Aus, by 1986, 50k Turkish Muslims  Heavy influx of Lebanese migrants (Christian/Muslim) post Civil War 1975 onwards

Hinduism in Aus  Arrived Pre 1901 as traders, labourers- Sugar Cane fields in QLD  Population decreased in 1901 (WAP)  People classified as Hindoos.  Number steadily increased- India, Sri Lanka, Fiji  Professionals/Skilled labourers- Escaping strict restrictions and Civil War  Appx half now live in Sydney  Hindu Practices- Yoga, Meditation, Understanding of Reincarnation and Karma: Modern Society  0.5% population increase between 2001 and 2006 (0.7%)

Buddhism in Aus  Earliest- Chinese part of 1850 gold rush  Immigration Res Act 1901 discouraged more coming  Buddhists did have high support- Alfred Deakin (2 nd PM) part of theosophical Society: utilised Buddhist teachings  Leo Berkely- Keen Advocate of Buddhism- Formed society in 1947

Buddhism  World Fellowship of Buddhists formed- Nun Dhammadinna visited Aus to spread teachings  Formalised Berkeley’s society- Buddhist Society of NSW 1953  Buddhist Fed of Aus 1958  1960s/70s saw growth, Australians becoming disenchanted with traditional Religions.  New Age Spirituality  1980s Visits by Dalai Lama, Free Tibet Moement, Building of Temples galvanised Buddhism  SE Asian migrants  2.1% of Aus pop, second largest tradition after Christianity

Islam  Third Largest (After Christianity/Buddhism)  Appx 340k in Aus (1.7 %)  36% Born in Aus, 50% under 24  Sydney/Melbourne  Turkish Gallipoli Mosque- Auburn  Lakemba Mosque  First Monotheistic Religion to Come to Aus (Mid 18 th Century)Fisherman

Islam  Post WW2- Turkey and Lebanon  Continuous stream of Migrants from war torn Middle East and African Nations  Influx from Yugoslavia after Civil War  Majority are Sunni, large emerging Shi’ite Groups  Druze Population emerging, not all classify themselves as Muslim and prefer to chose Other on census.  Continued struggles in Aus- Cronulla Race Riots, distinctive dress of women, Terrorism

Judaism  Between 1945/60- 30k Jews arrived in Aus- Melb and Sydney  High rate of Marriage outside Jewish community led to reduced numbers  Minor Issues of Anti-Semetism  Minor Population, segregated to themselves
