1.4 Do Now Krusty was told that a certain itching powder was the newest best thing on the market, it even claims to cause 50% longer lasting itches. Interested in this product, he buys the itching powder and compares it to his usual product. One test subject (A) is sprinkled with the original itching powder, and another test subject (B) was sprinkled with the Experimental itching powder. Subject A reported having itches for 30 minutes. Subject B reported to have itches for 45 minutes. Identify the following: 1. Independent variable 2. Dependent variable 3. Control group 4. Experimental group

Introduction Day 4 Determining Latitude and Longitude

Objective Students will read and understand maps used in Earth and Environmental Science. Major Questions -Do you know of another instance where coordinate points are important?

Homework Using any form of media (TV, radio, internet, newspaper) to find a current event article about an earth and environmental topic. Write two paragraphs about the current event. Be sure to include your opinion on the event you chose and a summary.

Agenda - Do Now - Penny Lab (3 rd ) / Extra Practice - Why do we care? - Latitude vs. Longitude - Absolute Location Investigation - Create your own Continent - Exit Ticket - Homework: Worksheet 1.10 Latitude & Longitude Practice

If you were lost in the Sea of Opinions and your friend in Facebook was coming to save you using this map, how would you tell him/her where to find you?

What was the most recent natural disaster to affect the United States?

Latitude These are horizontallines, along the X-axis. These are horizontal lines, along the X-axis. Latitude is the distance in o North or o South of the equator Latitude is the distance in o North or o South of the equator All points along the equator have a value of 0 o latitude. All points along the equator have a value of 0 o latitude. *Highlight the equator below in one color.

Longitude These are vertical lines, along the Y axis. These are vertical lines, along the Y axis. Longitude is the distance in o East or o West of the Prime Meridian Longitude is the distance in o East or o West of the Prime Meridian All points along the prime meridian have a value of 0 o longitude. All points along the prime meridian have a value of 0 o longitude. *Highlight the Prime Meridian below in another color.

Hemispheres The earth is divided into halves, or hemispheres by the equator and Prime Meridian The earth is divided into halves, or hemispheres by the equator and Prime Meridian The equator divides the Southern & Northern hemispheres The equator divides the Southern & Northern hemispheres The Prime Meridian divides the Eastern & Western hemispheres. The Prime Meridian divides the Eastern & Western hemispheres. The origin is the point at coordinates (0,0) where the equator and Prime Meridian intersect The origin is the point at coordinates (0,0) where the equator and Prime Meridian intersect

Absolute Location The latitude and longitude coordinate points of a place The latitude and longitude coordinate points of a place

Check Point You will be given clues and on your white board record your answer. Remember once you have your answer flip your board face down!! Let’s Begin!!

Equator Divides the Northern and Southern hemispheres

Latitude Horizontal lines along the x – axis

Origin The point where the equator and Prime Meridian intersect

Hemisphere The earth is split into two halves by the equator and the Prime Meridian

Longitude The distance in East and West of the Prime Meridian

Prime Meridian Divides the earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres

Absolute Location Coordinate points of a place

Absolute Location With your group complete the Absolute Location Investigation to figure out where the robber went with the maps! With your group complete the Absolute Location Investigation to figure out where the robber went with the maps!

Create Your Own Continent Create a continent Create a continent To practice plotting and reading coordinate points, you are going to create your own continent on the blank grid given to you! Close Out On the bottom of your notes, write 3 sentences summarizing your notes in your own words

Exit Ticket 1.On which axis are lines of latitude found? What direction do they measure 2.On which axis are lines of longitude found? What direction do they measure? 3.What line divides the earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres? 4.Which letter on the map below falls around Point 60 o S, 40 o W?
