DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING Common Components across the EAP Disability Categories of: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Impairment and Speech-Language Impairment 2009

Education Adjustment Program Session Overview Criterion 2 Verification Forms Review of Verification

Education Adjustment Program Criterion 2 All disability categories have two criteria: –Criterion 1 relating to impairment –Criterion 2 relating to activity limitations and participation restrictions for the student at school resulting from the impairment

Education Adjustment Program The student’s identified: autism spectrum disorder (ASD) level of functioning (II) severe ongoing primary spoken communication disorder (SLI) results in activity limitations and participation restrictions at school requiring significant education adjustments Criterion 2

Education Adjustment Program Criterion 2 For the purposes of verification, significant education adjustments are considered to be more than inclusive practices Significant education adjustments consider the range and breadth, frequency and intensity of adjustments that are required

Education Adjustment Program Criterion 2 The adjustments need to be specific and targeted to the identified impairment Some adjustments may benefit all/other students, but are essential for the identified student to access and participate in the intended curriculum

Education Adjustment Program Verification Forms Part A: Student details Part B: Evidence Supporting Verification –Evidence for criterion 1 (impairment) »similar to previous forms –Evidence for criterion 2 (activity limitations and participation restrictions) »common format across ASD, II and SLI Part C: Principal request

Education Adjustment Program Part B: Activity Limitations and Participation Restrictions This form has been developed to collect evidence for Criterion 2 and will reflect: Information that already exists within schools as part of the planning, assessment and reporting cycle Information that is useful for verification decisions Consistency across the categories of ASD, II and SLI

Education Adjustment Program There will be links to additional prompts for each category to assist in completing criterion 2 information for individual students. Part B: Activity Limitations and Participation Restrictions

Education Adjustment Program Verification Forms The same verification form is used for all verification request types: –Initial verification –Review of verification –Adding a category –Removal from the category

Education Adjustment Program Review of Verification At the time of verification, the statewide verifier will determine: –The need for a review –When the review should occur –The criteria to be reviewed (1 and/or 2)

Education Adjustment Program Review of Verification The following are considered when deciding if a review of verification is required: –Age –Stage of schooling –Individual impairment information –Described activity limitations and participation restrictions

Education Adjustment Program Handbook Guidelines for Verification of Disability will be replaced with the Handbook for the Education Adjustment Program
